Tigris & Euphrates

The best edition of one of the best, must-own board games in the world.
Tigris & Euphrates is one of my favourite games of the last twenty years, and a true classic of the modern boardgame era. Looking at the BGG rankings again, I find it an affront that it is not in the top-20 like it once used to be. Its current edition is the best that has ever been published. This is a must-buy; that's just it.

A true classic start game
A game in the same leagues as Settlers of Catan. Building rail routes is fun. Games can get very strategic, or can be very simple depending on the group. Most games there are no clear winners, with the winner only really being revealed at the end of the game. Really good gateway board game, which is easy to explain and play and good with big groups.

Knowledgeable Board Game Geeks
They sound like my friends, only they don't know me.
My Personal number 1, favorite podcast about boardgames. Give it a listen...
I love these guys, and they throw a great party at all the major conventions. This past year at Gen Con they took over a brewery and an entire city block. They are generous with their time and energy, and love what they talk about. The host does a kickstarter to do this professionally. The quality and the sheer amount of content is amazing, I can't imagine doing what he does with a day job. The scope of games they cover ranges from light weight card games to really heavy miniatures and they even have a Roleplaying podcast that wins awards too. Give them a listen and delve into the secret cabal world.

A Path Into Gaming
Tsuro is a game with a very simple concept: be the last player on the board. You do this by laying tiles which link to create winding paths around the board, which inevitably end up running off the board altogether. But be careful - colliding with another player results in a double elimination.

Because it boasts such trivial mechanics, it is very easy to pick up and play a few rounds quickly (some games can last under 10 minutes including setup), as well as being one that young children could enjoy. The player meeples have a good quality feel, and it can be satisfying watching the winding paths in the game board grow.

However, it very quickly becomes obvious just how simple this game is - winning is often less about trying to run your opponents off the board as it is trying to keep yourself in play for as long as possible, until you inevitably take yourself out of the game.

Tsuro, then, is an inviting game for introducing regular folk to the mad world of tabletop gaming, and is a solid option for beginning a proper games night with its simplicity and charm. I used it recently myself as a sweetner to help ease a new player into game night, and it worked a treat. It probably won't make regular appearances however.

I like it. Worth a look.
