The Avengers - Season 6
The Avengers - Season 6
1968 | Comedy, Fantasy, Thriller
The Avengers' final season is an infuriatingly inconsistent mixture of a couple of brilliant episodes, quite a few ones which just about pass muster, many which have clearly been cobbled together in a hurry as a contractual obligation, and a handful which are just plain dreadful. Linda Thorson, Diana Rigg's replacement as Patrick Macnee's co-star, tends to get a lot of stick, but it's not her fault the producers were fired, replaced, and then re-hired midway through the production of the season - hence the mish-mash of approaches. The relentless deadlines of the American networks the show was now being made for probably didn't help much.

It still mostly looks excellent, and Patrick Macnee is always good value, but coming after the peerless Emma Peel seasons it can't help but seem like a show which has visibly lost its way. As noted, there are some terrific individual episodes here, but you definitely have to know where to look for them.

12 Strong tells the story of the first Special Forces team deployed to Afghanistan after 9/11; under the leadership of a new captain, the team must work with an Afghan warlord to take down the Taliban.

This was definitely a film for the guys... and I say that because it was me and about ten lads in the cinema for this screening.

The cast of actors were brilliant, and it really felt like the story was performed with respect. It showed the sides of missions that we can only speculate about, so I really hope this one was done accurately.

One thing I did wonder... did they give Hemsworth coloured contacts for after his first battle? Because after all that talk of seeing the toll war takes on a man in his eyes I really felt like I could see the difference... so if they didn't, that script sure was good at sucking me in.

You never meet your heroes
In an alternate universe, The Banana Splits Adventure Hour is still running on TV and the youth of today still watch it. Harley is a huge fan of the chaotic puppet rock quartet. Harley has few friends, his father died, and his brother is turning into a millenial. His mother gets five tickets to a taping of the Banana Splits show for Harley's birthday. Unbeknownst to the studio audience, the network has just cancelled the show. Now all those fans are in danger as the show has nothing to lose so why not oversized Sid and Marty Krofft puppets murdering people. The concept for the movie is absolutely brilliant. However, the child actors in the cast can carry the tone of the film. Some of the campiness is evident, but the filmmakers never really match the surrealism of the Sid and Marty Krofft original to counter out the horror elements the writers have included.

Superb twisted take on the superhero genre
I read these a few years ago, but following the recent superb TV series, I have decided to re-read them. Volume 1 brings together the first 6 issues of the comic.
This first volume gives an introduction to the boys, and their purpose, and the fact that the world is now full of twisted, power-hungry superheroes, who have corporate sponsorship.
Hughie is devastated when his girlfriend becomes collateral damage in a fight between supes, and is quickly invited into the boys to seek revenge.
Unlike the TV series, the boys don't go straight after The Seven, preferring a lower profile target to make their comeback known. They go after Teenage Kix, a group of young superheroes who engage in all manners of unsavoury antics behind closed doors. Through spying, blackmail and eventual violence, the boys take down this group and make their purpose known.
Brilliant artwork, fantastic dialogue and a real twisted, yet believable, storyline.
