Kirk Bage (1775 KP) rated Venom (2018) in Movies
Feb 25, 2021
This is the worst kind of relatively big budget popcorn tease – the kind of film that knows its demographic will flood to it regardless of quality, so let’s not even bother trying to make it good. The first sign of this type is a script that is such gibberish you almost start to wonder if you are having a stroke, and Venom has that in spades! Just when you think you have a handle on it, off it goes on a tangent that has nothing to do with anything other than setting up the next CGI shot. Which is the second sign – CGI good enough to pass, but quite obviously not the cutting edge stuff we have already seen years ago in better films. Cheap and nasty. The third sign is a director that can bung a few thrills in the mix but has no care whatsoever for characterisation, pace, plot or sensible motivation. Well done Ruben Fleischer for being the first director to have two films included in my BMTBs, following Zombieland Double Tap – I really can’t split them. The only fun to be had here is watching Tom Hardy amuse himself with a comic book characature so far over the top it hurts. Michelle Williams and Riz Ahmed are horribly wasted and should be ashamed. Just awful stuff!

A big stinking low
There's not a whole lot of positive things to say about the fourth entry into the Final Destination franchise.
For starters, there's not one character here to root for. Every one is unlikable - you could argue that the writers were trying to make them this unlikable on purpose, so we as an audience can revel in their inevitably over the top death, but that tactic doesn't work, as shown throughout this pile of horse sh*t.
At this point in the franchise, much like the third film, it feels as though the kills are the main draw.
And to be honest, it's all very boring this time around. The writers try to be creative here and there, but the overuse of CGI and 3D gimmicks on show make the death scenes unintentionally goofy and cheap looking, rather than having any of the shock value carried by the first two films.
The lack of practical effects is mind boggling, as once again, stunt co-ordinator David R. Ellis directs, the same man responsible for the fantastic highway scene in FD2. The extra features show that he used practical effects whilst filming but for some unknown reason, the finished film just has CGI spaffed over everything.
You're not missing out on much if you give this one a pass.

Everything else
Absolutely awful
I think this is possibly the worse film of 2017 so far. Guy Ritchie's usual style just does not work in this setting. Strange, as it worked very well in the Sherlock Holmes films, but it just doesn't work here. The CGI is awful, the casting is terrible (the mage and David Beckham's cameo to name just a couple) and the story itself is just nonsense. The only thing that does work in this film is Charlie Hunnam, who is likeable and charismatic, surprising considering what he's got to work with script and story wise.

The gore didn't seem right
Well hard to believe it's be 15 years since the first Hellboy, this reboot largely seems to have gone under the radar. I can see why.
Despite the big budget feel and huge amount of SFX it just feels like a very standard action film. Quite gory and with every fight accompanied by a thumping rock track. The plot is very by the numbers. It doesn't have the sense of humour of the earlier films. Overall an average action film nothing special but you might enjoy more if you are a fan of the other Hellboy films.

Ryan Hill (152 KP) rated Fantastic Beasts: Crimes of Grindelwald (2018) in Movies

The cast particularly, Eddie Redmayne as Newt scamander, Jude Law as Albus Dumbledore and Johnny Depp as Gellert Grindelwald
Opening action sequence was cool.
Cgi was fantastic (1 more)
The world feels magical and the nostalga of being back in the wizarding world is always beautiful.
Grindelwald was underused considering it's called The crimes of grindelwald.
The plot was messy and sloppy. Too many flashback sequences including two back to back sequences that lasted 20 minutes (1 more)
The big plot twist/reveal at the end makes no sense from what i know from the Harry Potter lore.
Lack of Continuity
Action sequences weren't that impressive
A disappointing entry in the Harry Potter franchise

If you saw the 2nd film then you know what to fear in this 3rd installment. As with most direct to DVD low budget horror sequels, expect bad acting, more gore and nudity. This cast line up does have a few familiar faces in it but the acting is pretty hammy.
The cgi effects for the crocs and blood is really poor. Despite all that it probably just about surpasses the 2nd film, at least the story line this time has a bit more action. One for the low budget horror fans to laugh at!

Still a masterpiece!
The first time I saw Hellraiser I was amazed and disgusted simultaneously which doesn't happen too often when going to the movies nowadays.
I was thoroughly mesmerized by the gothic world Clive Barker had created and the interesting, yet enigmatic characters he created. The film has a unique look which is impressive considering the low budget.
I can see how those seeing it for the first time now would consider some of the optical effects dated by today's CGI perfection standards, but the ideas and themes are still compelling.
I have revisited often when I want a good creep.

What is there not to love about this film??
Living in a house with a family of boys/men who LOVE Marvel and all things related to the Marvel Universe, I was coerced into watching this film and was more than pleasantly surprised.
I love the chemistry between the actors and the relationship they have with the CGI elements of the production and one another. I love the interactions they all have with one another and look like they truly love their job which then makes the picture look effortless.
I'm sure I will be back for the next installment if there is to be one. ??

What starts as an entertaining intro for other hero's that is not really as bad as some have said, has no real heart and one too many introductions that takes up a huge chunk of the running time.
Notoriously it had production issues and many reshoots that messes with its pace, it's not horrendous and Steppenwolf makes a formidable foe, however some of the CGI of which there is much can appear badly executed.
Each of the hero's give it their best and their coalition works really well, but it's a little dull.
Not a bad watch, although I wont be in a rush to rewatch it.
