Nickg24 (492 KP) rated It: Chapter Two (2019) in Movies

This film started well for me,the introduction of the losers club members now all grown up and having left (bar one of them) derry many years ago. Then they return and though unconvinced at the start that pennywise has returned they are eventually convinced and begin to prepare for the showdown with the evil clown.
The running time for me was to long by at least 30 minutes, certain scenes could have easily been cut and would not have been missed and some of the CGI monsters were laughable. The way pennywise is finally defeated in the end was a bit of a let down, certainly not what I was expecting.
The actors were great in their roles though, especially bill hader as richie and the stephen king cameo was very funny.

Barry Newman (204 KP) rated San Andreas (2015) in Movies

The plot can be written on the back of a postage stamp (massive earthquake destroys most of California) but I found this to be surprisingly enjoyable addition to the crowded disaster movie field. The action is very satisfying and the special effects impressive, not as obviously cgi as some of these films can be. Where this film succeeds is in it’s casting. Dwayne Johnson makes for a likeable and charismatic lead and there’s solid support from Paul Giamatti’s quake studying scientist and Alexandra Daddario as Dwayne’s resourceful (and absolutely gorgeous) daughter. Of course it does fall victim to a few familiar cliches and I rolled my eyes at the final shot of a battered Stars and Stripes flying in the wind when the carnage ends but overall I did have allot of fun watching this.

This is one of the most visually striking films of 2018 in its luscious CGI, stunning costumes/makeup, and seamlessly staged practicals but holy shit is it ever insufferable to get through. 99 minutes has seldom ever felt so long, harkens back to that era of intolerable slimehouse kids films with the most bland scripts imaginable as if that genre was somehow worthy of an early nostalgic lookback (though according to millennial social media, it is...) Knightley is aces and single-handedly saves it from dogshit status with that squeaky-dog-toy voice and cotton candy wig paired with an unreserved commitment to chewing the scenery. Freeman is as boring as he has been for seemingly the past 9 years and it also suffers from a severe lack of Eugenio Derbez.

LeftSideCut (3776 KP) rated Skyfire (2019) in Movies

I must admit, I'm not overly familiar with Chinese cinema, but I really hope that a boyband music video immediately playing alongside the end credits is the norm - it really tops off this surreal experience.
Everything in this movie is completely over dramatic, from the characters in general, to the hugely cliché ridden action script. The CGI flits rapidly between being half decent to dodgy as fuck. Jason Isaacs adopts an uncomfortably out of place South African accent, and the action scenes are so so. And in all honesty, I low key enjoyed it. It might dumb natural disaster fodder from Simon "Con Air" West, but I would happily take this over the 2012's of this world in a heartbeat. Skyfire is average at worst, and wonderfully silly at best.

LeftSideCut (3776 KP) rated Drive Angry (2011) in Movies

I'm pretty sure the thought process for Drive Angry was along the lines of "let's make a film where Nicolas Cage has a gunfight whilst fucking someone, and he's also smoking a cigar, and swigging on a bottle of Jack Daniels" and then they just wrote the rest of the screenplay around that.
It's always entertaining to watch Cage do his thing, and Drive Angry has a handful of fun moments and some half decent ideas, but dammit, it's too try hard in its attempts at bad-assery, the CGI is an eyesore, and this is the second film I've seen where writer Todd Farmer literally wrote himself into a gratuitous sex scene. It was weird the first time, second time its just plain creepy.
Drive Angry is the movie equivalent of an STI.

Mel (490 KP) rated The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance in TV
Oct 5, 2019
I grew up in the 80s and it would be fair to say I've loved the original Dark Crystal film ever since I first saw it so there was no question when we heard about the new TV series that we were going to watch it.
Although it took me a few episodes to get into thr series overall I've loved it and that feel that they've gone back to the original puppets rather than an overuse of CGI. My main problem has been similar to watching the star wars prequels in that I've been watching it with the knowledge of what will happen (based on what we know from the film) and I feel that has taken something away from my enjoyment of the characters.
