Smrfgrll (3 KP) rated Magic: The Gathering in Tabletop Games
Dec 10, 2018
This is a bit of a difficult game to learn because the possibilities are endless. It's a deck building game that has been around for years so there's literally thousands of cards at your disposal depending on the game format you want to play. It can be as simple as picking up a starter deck that is premade and playing against someone else who has a deck in the same format. The game is very good at motivating younger children to read as well as helping with basic math skills. My nephews have been playing along with adults since they were very young around 8 or so and still love playing to this day and they are 13+.

Kids will love it, parents will tolerate it
I took my daughter and 8 of her friends to see this for her birthday "treat". They all loved it. Having seen very little of Mr Bean etc, I guess they had never really seen anything like this. Pure slapstick. Rowan Atkinson's rubber face and totally cringeworthy dancing.
The storyline is fairly basic Connery-era Bond, with a few funny moments, and simple enough to keep children engaged and not too daft to annoy adults.
While this was far from a great film, I have seen a lot worse recently, and the kids all enjoyed it. (their rating = 8/10, mine = 5/10, generous average = 7/10)

Irene M (130 KP) rated The Rainbow Stick Boy in Books

Simple illustrations accompany a wonderful story about a stick boy who is born different.
While every other stick person is one colour, Huey is born rainbow coloured. The book looks at how he is treated differently, how he tries to hide what he is so he can fit in and could easily be used to help children understand MANY differences in life. I read this to see if it would help my Aspergers son to understand that being a bit different is okay, and it will be perfect for that, but could easily be used for any other physical or behavioral difference, possibly even as a way to help understand transgender and homosexuality and other "differences" to ALL ages.

Awix (3310 KP) rated The Terrornauts (1967) in Movies
Oct 20, 2019
Almost wholly inept British sci-fi B-movie. Aliens abduct a shed containing two astronomers, their secretary, an accountant, and the institute's tea lady in order to secure their help in repelling an attack on the Earth.
Starts slow, is dull in the middle, gets very silly towards the end (it's the kind of movie which seems to assume that the audience for SF films is made up of very young children and congenital idiots). Production values and special effects manage to be even worse than you'd expect, but deserves such a low score mainly because it doesn't contain a single interesting or original idea. Every bit as poor as its reputation would suggest.

James Koppert (2698 KP) rated The Christmasaurus and the Winter Witch in Books
Dec 31, 2019
I believe
The Christmasaurus was wonderful book mixing the children's magic of christmas with dinosaurs, two things kids love. This, the second book in the series doesn't let the magic go, if anything this is a better story. Tom Fletcher manages to weave a complicated story about magic and time travel and yet still make it suitable for children and the illustrations make it even more gorgeous. This series has the potential to be made into a movie and become some of the best love Christmas characters in the world. My daughter loved this book, so did i. She is 8 and I am 40.

Jeremy King (346 KP) rated Won't You Be My Neighbor? (2018) in Movies

Just remember 143
This documentary is about a man i watched all the time when i was a child. I have learned many life lessons from him. I have showed my own children some of his shows. I this reminds me you have to talk to kids as a kid. If you grew up watching him or have kids watch it and learn why he was a great teacher. I found it very moving documentary.
And when you watch it you will learn why the header to this is 143.
Now if you know song sing it with me
A beautiful day for a neighbor
Could you be mine?
Would you be mine?

It's funny (2 more)
It's one of a kind
It has some seriously catchy music
Not enough people have seen this!
Not many people I know have seen this so I tell everyone to give it a go.
A kids film, completely off the radar, as it's not branded (not pixar or disney etc) it's a German, Danish and Irish creation, about 3 children that take get into all sorts of problems. It bombed at the box office but it definitely didn't deserve the bad press, it's about family, loyalty, the importance of intelligence and a hint of magic.
It has funny, scary (for young kids anyway) , tense, lovable scenes that everyone can enjoy.

Ross (3284 KP) rated Before Watchmen: Minutemen in Books
Nov 4, 2019
A good backstory
Although not officially Moore-approved, this six-issue collection gives a glimpse of the glitz and glamour of the original group of superheroes, before Watchmen. We get a short introduction to the members of the crew (most of which have their own volumes in the "Before Watchmen" series), and how they came about and interacted. Some amusing fails from their early attempts to foil justice (remember these aren't superheroes, these are guys who donned a costume and went looking for trouble), leading up to a case involving the kidnapping and murder of children.
I'm not a huge fan of the artwork here, being quite cartoony, but it seems to fit the era OK.

AT (1676 KP) rated Playmobil: The Movie (2019) in Movies
Mar 6, 2020
I don't think this movie was as terrible as most of the reviews said it was. It's a kids' movie, about a sibling relationship, and basically, playing with a lot of the Playmobil sets together, as kids do. It was corny and dorky at times, but that's what made it fun. The "acting" was over the top at times, but it was how kids play with the characters. It definitely was silly, but I don't think it was awful. I laughed quite a bit. You just have to accept the play world of children when you watch it. It wasn't the best movie that I've seen, but it was still fun to watch.
