Timeless!
A friend recently reminded me in 1983 when this film was released it only managed to make just over $19 million at the US box office. Movies that beat it in 1983 included High Road to China, Class, My Tutor and Two of a Kind. Ever heard of any of those? Didn't think so.

So how, 35 years later, does this film still endure so much it is played on a 24 hour loop and several US TV stations the few days leading up to Christmas?

Plenty to love. Relateable, enduring characters. Is Santa real? Cute and fun. Not politically correct. Lots of memorable scenes and unforgettable moments.

I would say there is a very short list of holiday films I try and make time for annually, but this is definitely one of them!

Pretty sure I've seen Class (if it's the movie with Andrew McCarthy and Jacqueline Bisset) and definitely seen High Road to China at least twice...

Conquered or conqueror
Does a nation or peoples with ability have a responsibility? That seems to be one of the central questions. There is a long history of nonwhite civilizations that developed more advanced technology that became conquered by the white nations (more through their disease, but that is another story, than their weaponry although they had that too.) Wakanda and its king have remained hidden in an effort to prevent such a tragedy.
China gave us gunpowder, Japan feudalism, Arabs medicine and math, Africa astronomy, and Mayans soccer. Yet all of these people became conquered and enslaved over time. T'Chaka seems to attempt to prevent this eventuality, but T'Challa soon faces his own dilemma. When an African-African cousin wants to expose Wakandan ability to his oppressed "others," Black Panther, king of Wakanda, must come out of hiding to assist the world and possibly expose their many secrets.

As Tony Scott films go this one’s a pretty decent effort. Redford is slick and sophisticated as a retiring CIA agent and Pitt is equally effective as his eager to learn student.

The tight script and shooting make for an entertaining mix of explosions and plot twists. Robert Redford plays Nathan Muir a soon to be retired CIA operative who has spent the past few years training his protege Tom Bishop (Brad Pitt).

When a routine extraction in China goes wrong Bishop is captured behind enemy lines and it is up to Muir to get through all the political red tape to help pull him out.

The film is tense even in the boardroom scenes, and we get a real sense of the relationship between Bishop and Muir with good use of flashbacks. This is first rate and another winning film from the late Tony Scott.
