Erika (17789 KP) rated Thor: Ragnarok (2017) in Movies
Nov 3, 2017
So initially, the only reason I wanted to see this movie was because of the director, Taika Waititi. The Thor movies haven't been the greatest, but I was hoping, somehow, they could manage to make a good Thor film. I've loved everything Waititi has directed, so it's no surprise that I also loved this movie.. I'm definitely suffering from superhero movie fatigue, and this is what Marvel needed.
There were actual character arcs! Chris Hemsworth did well with the comedy, as did Tom Hiddleston. I might actually start watching Hiddleston's movies again.
The reason this only gets a 9, rather than 10: Hulk. I can't stand the Hulk, and I feel like they only put him in there for the children.
1st post-credit scene was great, 2nd was lame.
ALSO, that MATT DAMON cameo was hilarious.
I can't wait to see it again on Sunday.

On the surface this is a football podcast. I wouldn't normally listen to those but the allure of Bob Mortimer was too much to resist.
The first couple of episodes are very football focused (pun intended) and just need to be endured. They are very much finding their feet and settling into a pattern.
After that we are off into the realms of Bob's imagination as his features ("wife's questions", "Gangs of the EPL", "Scottish tales" etc etc) emerge into the world. All of these features show the kind of quirky comedy that Reeves and Mortimer are known for, but for once it is clear how much of this Bob contributes.
The features are all hilarious or at the very least entertaining and the result of two football fans talking a bit about football but generally just larking about.
Possibly my favourite podcast.

Fun, engaging story
Almost as weird as me!
There aren't many books that you can read from start to finish, every time you finish. This one is a rarity, with an story reminiscent of 80's horror, and with a nostalgic comedy feel, throughout. A book about supernatural sci-fi, with a very fresh style, John Dies At The End does a fantastic job at having you relate to its characters. There's a warmth to the descriptiveness of the book, that instantly nurtures your empathy for the colourful occupants of this mind-altering adventure.
The novel does twist and turn, with a number of surprises, and comes to a cataclysmic end, that leaves you wanting more, and ready for the sequel (also excellent), but entirely satisfied at the close of this story.
A must read for any horror or sci-fi fan.

Suswatibasu (1703 KP) rated Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine in Books
Sep 19, 2017
Completely different to what I expected, witty but rather sad
I've heard that this book is a comedy because of the narrator's frank outlook on life, however this is definitely not the case.
Eleanor Oliphant is socially awkward, very blunt but well spoken and seems to have a few dysfunctional issues. The author then explores why this must be the case, especially her relationship with her past and her controlling mother. The novel is about trauma and mental health, and how depression can cause people to act out in unusual ways. It is funny at times when she has no clue about social conventions and how much emphasis is put on the mundane.
It's important for showing that one isn't 'mad' for being different, merely misguided and that by addressing problems head on and getting the right support Eleanor Oliphant is actually completely fine.

When bad movies happen to good actors.
I like Mila Kunis and adore Kate McKinnon on SNL but this movie is a huge clunker. There is nothing to save the poor plot and script. It's supposed to be a comedy/action film but fails at both. It's kind of all over the place and difficult to follow not because of complexity but because of the randomness of situations and scenes. The few funny moments were probably ad-libbed. The trailer was the best part of the movie, everything else was just awful. When the actors were on the press junket for the film, I recall them saying how funny the movie is. I think they don't always realize that movies that may have been fun for them to film are tedious for viewers to watch. Fun does not equal good or funny.

Lewis John Hatchett (23 KP) rated John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum (2019) in Movies
May 21, 2019 (Updated May 23, 2019)
Was an intriguing film which to most (myself included) believed ended the trilogy. It didn't, it sets up for a sequel.
With loads of action and tons of violence to boot, if you enjoyed the previous two films my honest opinion is to see this but don't get your hype up to high and just enjoy the ride. Good inclusion of some perfect comedy moments and dialogue that it keeps you watching.
Only issue that comes to mind is story wise it doesn't really go anywhere by the end of the film theres not much corrected than more strings attached to further the story.
Overall I'd say see this film if you're an action nut and want to see alot of broken arms, shots to the head and neck and a well thrown Axe to the head.

Mark Halpern (153 KP) rated Patch Adams (1998) in Movies

Laughter can help cure
This a true story about Hunter "Patch" Adams who wants nothing more than to help people. He attends medical school and is disliked by most professors becuase of his attitude towards medicine. He takes an unconventional method in using humor to help the people t heal. Of course there are a few who belive in him and even some of the medical staff. However the teaching professors disagree and try their best to stop him from becoming a dr. He fights and graduates and ending up opening a institute called the Gesundheit Institute which treats a more form of holistic care and treats all patients big and small.
This a very Dark Comedy with an sand and great ending. Only the Late great Robin Willliams (RIP) could have player this character and shown what type of person this character is.

Murphy back to his best
Based on the true story of comedy and rap pioneer rudy ray moore, this is a delightful film that should launch eddie murphy back into the big time.
Murphy plays Moore,an entertainer desperately seeking that one break through moment that will lead to him becoming famous. That break eventually comes to him in the form of his outlandish and adult only records and stand up routine to the making and eventually success of his dolemite movie.
Murphy is at his very best here, delivering the hilarity and warmth of moore but also letting his other co-stars shine around him as well.A special mention has to go to wesley snipes as well who is hilarious as the co star and director of the dolemite movie who is always drunk off his ass and prone to the occasional temper tantrum.

Funny, I mean very funny the total premise of the film is amusing and it plays on it alot (2 more)
Story is quite good and characters go on quite an arc
Supporting characters are excellent and are probably what keeps the film going and make it enjoyable
Probably plays on the honour a bit too much which makes the action take a back seat. (1 more)
Film takes quite a while to get going
Good but not brilliant
In the past comic book movies could be deemed as being to serious(batman) but this has changed recently with films like deaspool. Shazam going down this approach with this film being basically a comedy the action takes a back seat. To me the film relays too much on the houmor but the supporting cast and good story make the film quite enjoyable although it does take a little while to get going

Brooks almost at his finest!
Contains spoilers, click to show
Not Brooks best, but I'd say his 3rd best, just after Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein.
The film follows Brooks character, a moviemaker with an original idea, a new silent movie with some of the biggest stars of the 70s. The film is mainly based around hiring the cast and saving the studio from being bought by an evil conglomerate.
Despite the movie being completely silent apart from a single word, the jokes in the title cards are hilarious, and the return of traditional slapstick comedy is somehow very comforting.
The cast is what really makes this film. The comedic talents of Mel Brooks, Dom Deluise, Marty Feldman and Sid Caesar are brilliant, with hilarious cameos from 70s stars Burt Reynolds, Paul Newman, Marcel Marceau and Liza Minelli, this film is perfect for the whole family!
