Dean (6927 KP) rated Happy Death Day 2U (2019) in Movies
Feb 20, 2019
Deja Vu
I really enjoyed the first @Happy Death Day (2017) film which was a refreshing mix of Slasher meets Groundhog Day with a comic twist. This sequel is very similar, looks like it was filmed at the same time? This time round we have more of a SciFi theme to explain the time loop in both films. It's still fun but obviously not quite as original as the first offering. The whodunit element takes more of a back seat in this film.
Overall an enjoyable film but you really do need to see the first one before this. If you liked that then you won't mind the Deja Vu watching this.

Movie Metropolis (309 KP) rated Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) in Movies

“Marvel has gone mad.” This was the kind of reaction that many film-fans greeted the news of a film adaptation of Guardians of the Galaxy, one of the comic-book company’s lesser known band of heroes.
Thankfully, the film is an absolute masterclass. With the best ensemble cast of the entire MCU, some crazy set design and a great soundtrack, James Gunn’s MCU directorial-debut is practically perfect in every single way. We even get a decent villain in Lee Pace’s Ronan the Accuser. Plus, it’s got Glenn Close spouting absolute nonsense and Vin Diesel getting paid a ridiculous amount of money to say three words over and over again. What could be better?

Captain America: world police
Hold on to your shields, cos cap is back and he didn't skip leg day!
Wth a new less campy outfit and an ever growing addiction to kick someone's ass,
Captain America returns to take on the also returning Hydra, he must form a team to take on the oncoming threat which has a secret weapon....the winter soldier!
With awesome cameos, plenty of action and a twist you didn't see coming (unless you read the comics) Captain America: the winter soldier is a must see for all comic book nerds and geeks alike and to anyone in seek of a great action movie
Starring chris evans, Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L Jackson, Sebastian stan, Bath Mackie, Cobie Smulders.

Amazing, instant classic
Let it be known I am a huge comic fan. I love the fact these movies are being reinvented and reimagined. The Avengers has left nothing to imagination, a brilliant way to introduce so many characters and giving so many ways for the industry to veer off in to.
The performances by the actors is phenomenal along with the visual effects.
The only downside is that I found the middle of the film a little drab, it seemed to take a little longer than I would of liked and slowed everything down a little much. The visual effects were brilliant however I just wish the storyline throughout the middle matched these ratings.

Mark Halpern (153 KP) rated Spider-Man 2 (2004) in Movies

MCU Sequel
As we all know sometimes sequels can let us down. This one was par for the course. We catch up with Spiderman doing his good deeds, still being love sick with Mary Jane and now dealing with his friend harry wanting the death of spiderman because he thinks he killed his dad and he is the head of Oscorp. Our new villian is Dr. Octopus. A physicist whose experiment goes wrong cause a robotic set of arms graphing to his spinal cord.
We also see Spiderman faltering during this movie losing some of his powers cause he relies on them too much and not himself. Not bad for a sequel and it keeps with the comic book better than most.

Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2271 KP) rated I Even Funnier (I Funny, #2) in Books
Mar 9, 2018
As Jamie Grimm prepares for the regionals in the Planet's Funniest Kid Contest, he must continue to deal with typical middle school problems like figuring out girls and relationships, his friend's problems, and tutoring his cousin who also happens to be the class bully.
I enjoyed this book more than the first in the series, possibly because I saw the more slice of life nature of the book. Some stories start and end early while others for running threads that last longer. Holding it all together is the comic contest. The fun illustrations help make this book a very fast read.

A comic book written by a play wright? That's right.
In a world where two warring factions in another dimension are in a war for ages, their two future rulers have been placed on Earth to grow up. When they meet, they immediately feel a connection.
This is not Romeo and Juliet, as the issue immediately tells us.
I was absolutely riveted. For the exposition that this issue had To do, ithought it was done very smoothly. I also found I really enjoyed the characters especially the main two. My biggest regret isthatthere is currently only one issue out. I will be adding this series to my monthly pulls because I believe it warrants the support.

David McK (3496 KP) rated Star Wars: Captain Phasma in Books
Jan 28, 2019
Lead-in comic mini-series to "The Last Jedi", following Captain Phasma's disappointing showing (i.e didn't do much, then got sent down a garbage chute) in "The Force Awakens".
This, effectively, is about how she covers her failings and works her way back into The First Order, covering her tracks and using another escapee from the now-explodeed StarKiller base as her fall guy.
While the art - like all the recent Marvel Star Wars issues - is good, the story, however, leaves a lot to be desired: there's nothing really memorable about this, now real 'wow' moment (like there was in '[b:Vader Down|27247275|Vader Down (Star Wars)|Jason Aaron|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1462909901s/27247275.jpg|47296344]';) to make it stick in the mind.
In short: forgettable.

David McK (3496 KP) rated Earth Unaware (The First Formic War, #1) in Books
Jan 30, 2019
A prequel to Orson Scott Card's classic [b:Ender's Game|8782597|Ender's Game|Frederic P. Miller|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1348614228s/8782597.jpg|11571577], with the events of this taking place before Ender is even born.
This thus takes the opportunity to flesh out the background to that novel, filling in the gaps of what had previously happened, in particular how the First Formic War had come about. It was also, I believer, written alongside a comic-book series, which might explain the sometimes fractured nature of the narrative!
While not the best 'new' (to me) sci-fi book I've read, this is also not he worst: I also have to say that, picking it up for only £1 in a local Bargain books I can't really complain!

Based on a DC comic series this is the tale of 3 women who decide to play gangster up in hells kitchen when their mob connected husbands are sent to prison for 3 years.Their rise to power is noticed by the mafia and they eventually go into business together but things start to come off track when their husbands are released from jail early.
I have to say I've never ever been a fan of melissa mcCarthy but she is actually ok in this along with her two other co stars. There were a few flaws to this film, the pace of it is often slow and lacks some intensity but still an enjoyable crime drama overall.
