Sums up all my childhood movies
Awesome adventurous kids, a daring quest, and being set in 1980s America, pretty much sums up all childhood movies into one. The Goonies is an absolute classic coming of age movie of kids trying to stop a rich developer buying up property and splitting up the young friends. Their way is to find mythical treasure via a map from a so-called legend. Along the way are some good old fashioned villains, some challenges and a pirate ship. Still watch it every Christmas.

Another teen angst coming-of-age film
I was rather disappointed with this film, mostly because it definitely didn't live up to the hype.

There has been a spate of films that capture and showcase a city, and then casually layer it with a superficial story. In this case, it was Sacramento, California.

Here we see nothing particular new - a young teenager, played by the wonderful Saoirse Ronan, who insists on being called Lady Bird, hates her parents and wants to leave the nest desperately. Again nothing to see here. Beautifully shot, but shrug-worthy.

Bandslam is a decent coming-of-age film for ages 7-13, but it is your typical American high school story where the guy gets the girl and everything works out in the end. The only good thing that comes from this film is the hidden truth that is revealed about society: when rumours are passed around about you and you move school, but the students at the new school always find out about your background and use it as a weapon. This brutal truth is shown throughout the film as Will tries, unsuccessfully, to hide the fact his father killed a kid whilst drinking under the influence and is now in prison with a DUI. What is most shocking is, not only do the students at his new school use his father's DUI against him, but so does Charlotte, who was supposedly Will's friend. Overall, Bandslam is more suited to younger audiences with an open mind.

Bundle of pain and sadness
Finished this little bundle of sadness and pain today. If you have recently lost someone, whether it be through death or otherwise, please give this book a read. Coming from an author of older age, I was not expecting it to be this raw and emotional, and yet here I am- sitting in a daze rethinking my entire life. Do not let the title fool you like it fooled my therapy book club group- ‘magical’ in this case is not meant to denote happiness.

If you love the likes of A Fault in Our Stars, Everything Everything or 100 Days or Sunlight you will love this coming of age story. It focuses on two people; Finch who has had a tough childhood and suffers from depressive episodes and Violet who has recently lost her sister in a car accident. The find each other on a ledge and Finch makes its his mission to save Violet from the spiral she has found herself in by exploring Indiana. It takes you on an emotional ride, but only one of them makes it in the end and it is heartwrenching!
