This had just the right amount of history, myth and magic for me - well, anything with those three things in is a winner, in my opinion!
With the resurgence of Greek Myth (yes, I’m a fan), it has been really heartening to see the odd Norse and Celtic myth and folklore book coming out. I enjoy a good retelling, and 5is is a good read. Yes, there are some seemingly modern themes: Æthelburg and Herla’s attraction and Ine’s asexuality in particular, but who’s to say these weren’t appropriate in 60AD? I’m sure homosexuality and asexuality have been a ‘thing’ for as long as there’s been humans (there probably is someone who could say - this is the internet, after all).
To me, as a listener/ reader, this just felt really genuine and well researched. I loved learning about the characters and their world.
Just as Sistersong left me eagerly awaiting Song of the Huntress, I’m really looking forward to whatever comes next from Lucy Holland.

If you aren’t already a fan of this series and are up to date, don’t pick up this book. It starts just after the last one ended, and as such, it has some major spoilers. That also means it starts a little slowly wrapping up some things that we didn’t really need wrapped up here. But once it gets going, I was fully invested. Political intrigue plays a heavy part of the plot, and I loved it. I saw a couple of things coming early, but others took me completely by surprise. It all works because I love Jax and the rest of the core cast so much. I’m already plotting when I can revisit these characters again to find out what happens next.

On her eighteenth birthday, Sierra discovers her life is one big web of lies. Her father has kept her in the dark about her supernatural powers and the demanding destiny that awaits her. When he is brutally murdered, Sierra must leave behind her normal life and enter a world of magic where danger lurks around every corner and a friend can turn into a foe within a heartbeat.
To stand a chance of survival, Sierra must learn to control her new telekinetic powers before her father's killers find her. In Savannah, she meets magic-user Gavin, a man that is equal parts stubborn, handsome, and mysterious. After she convinces him to train her, they enter a shaky alliance, neither trusting the other fully.
Just as Sierra is coming to terms with her new life, corpses begin to show up all over Savannah. And Sierra fears she's next...
This was good for a first in the series. It built up well was fast paced without leaving details out. The characters were solid and I will say this writer is afraid to kill them off which is always a good sign for story development. Looking forward to more!

I also loved that it was set in Erlangen, about a 3-hour drive away from my home. Having a fantasy and/or romance series set in Germany puts this in the minority but, to me, also makes it stand out.
There are lots of secrets in this book and lots of hints of what might be coming. I was so pleased for Bianca but I really hope Nicole gets her comeuppance! Time flows quickly in this book and, sometimes, that made it hard to keep up.
All of the characters in this book are really well-written, and it doesn't matter if you like or loathe them. A great start to the series by a new-to-me author but one I will definitely be reading more from. Definitely recommended by me.
