Writing about visual art, perhaps more than any other cultural category, tends toward the incomprehensible and, well, artless.

But there are of course some wonderful, noteworthy exceptions to this norm.

Here are The Vulture's favourite art books — a term that encompasses books about art, books by artists, and books of art — from 2016.

Okay but nothing really new
The acting, CGI, and basic plot of this movie are decent to fill an otherwise boring evening at home. The problem comes in with the setting: what could have built off of a rich cultural heritage and created a unique story has instead devolved into a tale of terrifying shamans, superstitious villagers, crawling cockroaches, and a taciturn amah. And the requisite burial(s) in the Ganges.

"This restless, vibrant, indelibly funny novel tackles migration, cultural identity, and the family saga with energetic good cheer. You can tell how much Smith loves her characters, and she makes me love them, too."

"Kafka’s unfinished novel features so many lives and so many different moments from the development of our society. Its lessons can be applied to the cultural and political moment we live in right now."

"If this were the only cultural history of the 1960s you read, you'd get it a whole lot more than most white male boomers who thought the 60s were about making everything cool for everybody, man."

Funny and serious at the same time.
I've only just started reading it and so far it has opened my mind to other people's experiences of how their cultural background fits in to where they are. I will reccommend this book to anyonem
