Erika (17789 KP) rated Dracula Untold (2014) in Movies
Jul 1, 2018
When I first saw the previews for this movie, I was sold. I like different takes on Dracula, and I thought the backstory they built was really cool. I was kind of sad when it didn't do well, and it'll probably never get a sequel. I loved Luke Evans as Dracula, and if Universal had decided not to can Dark Universe, I'd have hoped they'd have opted to bring him back.

A good stand alone book in the Dark Ones series, but I felt as if something was missing. The relationship was nice and I liked the two main characters, Sam and Paen. I loved the idea of a Scottish Dark One, and even though some of Paen's dialogue was stilted, I still thought he was a good character. However, Sam's cousin, Clare, was trying and she didn't add any comedic value, she was just a self-absorbed nuisance. The ending was a little dumb, but not the worst I've read. I liked how Katie MacAlister expanded the Dark Ones universe, but wished there had been at least one character from previous entries so it felt as if it were part of the series. Overall, it was a nice way to spend some time, but not much is memorable and not a keeper for me.

Pretty funny, at times (1 more)
An interesting premise
Dragged a bit (1 more)
A little too heavy for a comedy
Dark surreal dystopian comedies need more humor
Good, not quite as darkly funny as I expected, seemed more concerned with the politics and "rules of the universe" than entirely necessary which kind of messed with the pacing dragged the humor a little bit. Other people were having a hard time understanding the world as built, anyway, so it seems a bit of wasted effort.

Erika (17789 KP) rated Tarkin in Books
Apr 21, 2018
This is one of the best books to come out of the new canon. Grand Moff Tarkin is one of my favorite characters from the Star Wars universe, and I was glad that he got his own book. Tarkin was raised on a rural, rough planet, and it's definitely a big part of who Tarkin is. Tarkin is also aware of who Darth Vader is, as the Emperor had them working together prior to Anakin turning to the dark side.

Chris Hooker (419 KP) rated The Body Electric in Books

[Beth Revis] does it again with [The Body Electric]. In this futuristic world things are not always what they may seem. Ella is miserable due to the death of her father and the impending death of her mother. She just wants to be happy and make her mother happy. Unfortunately there are dark secrets hidden that will turn her world upside down.
If you have been wise enough to read the [Across the Universe] trilogy (and if you haven't you should, NOW) you will recognize the wonderful writing style and storytelling as well as references to Godspeed. [Revis] imagines a dark yet hopeful future. She does a magnificent job of showing both the good and evil of the human spirit.

Fucked up Masterpiece
There so much to say about this movie and yes 99.9% is good. The characters are very funky and lovable, even though you really wouldn’t want to meet them in a dark alley way . Everything about the setting is artistic and unique taking you into a completely different universe. The scenes playing out don’t always seem to make sense and it’s extremely hard to predict the characters actions. Oh yea and they have a milk bar... That itself makes the movie watching hehe
