Nichole Knight (6 KP) rated Animal Circus in Books

Definitely Not a Children's Story and It's Worth the Read
The first thing I thought of when reading this was George Orwell's Animal Farm ... However Batchelor's story can not be compared to that. It's own uniquely written work on circus animals who wish to find peace and freedom.
Even though the cover is bright, quirky, and inviting this book is not for children.
For a short story, it's very depressing from start to finish. I honestly wish there was more to the middle. And, the end left me wanting to know more, though it was a twist that I was not expecting!
For a short to the point story it's worth the time in reading.
((I won an ebook copy in a giveaway on Goodreads.com and this is my honest opinion.))

Lost in a coin toss
Number 7 of my #top10 #favourite #films is 'No Country For Old Men'. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
Bleak & #depressing #NoCountryForOldMen takes all the #hope you have for the good guys winning and rips it out of your hands again and again. Not only is it #unfair, tense and #gorgeous to look at its constantly making you think deeply while toying with your emotions too. Acting is next level, the dialog is masterfully slick and #javierbardem might just be the #coldest & #scariest #villain ever put on screen making No Country For Old Men a film that really should be in everyone's top 10 list. Deciphering its intricate plot, many metaphors and head spinning #intelligence is something i sadly #feel i will never achieve fully but my god do i enjoy trying.

So, I was 90% sure that I had already read this book but now that I have reread it I am not sure.
I read this book back in middle school right after I read "Gathering Blue" and all I remember was that it was sad and that I liked it. Now that I am 27, I figured I needed to try it out again. I'm definitely glad that I read this again. I didn't remember anything. It was like a brand new book.
First off, the characters were fascinating and I loved the depressing feeling of this book. If you're in a bad mood, this definitely isn't the book to read. I found myself angry, depressed, and frustrated throughout most of the book. The dystopian feel of the book was really good.
All in all, it was a good book.

Very disturbing
What worries me the most about this film is how disturbingly accurately it reflects today’s society. There is never a doubt about the realism of how the insta-celeb and the stalker-esque are depicted, and it makes for a very depressing watch. It really puts me off using certain social media.
Aubrey Plaza is a great choice, as she really knows how to do crazy stalker and she makes the film even more disturbing. My problem was the plot was a bit predictable, I didn’t think it was particularly funny and I felt the ending was a bit of a letdown and potentially not the right message to be sending? Its not a terrible film and I appreciate what it’s trying to do, it’s just not a film to watch if you need cheering up!

These Girls Really Are Killin' It
A couple of British friends chatting about true crime, particularly murder, and discussing just how screwed up humans can be. While the podcast started out as Lux and Sam, it has since changed to Lux and Meg, and while Sam did have a very smooth voice and quick wit, the change to Meg has not made the podcast less than it was - it has simply made it different.
At the end of each episode (starting fairly recently) the girls have a segment where they say what they have been "killin'" each week, to provide a little lift at the end of the episode, and make the world appear a little less depressing.
Altogether, a cracking little podcast, definitely worth a listen.

Erika (17788 KP) rated Interview with the Vampire (1994) in Movies
Jul 26, 2020 (Updated Jul 26, 2020)
I re-watched this film the other day, and I forgot how much I loved it. I won't compare it to the book, since Anne Rice was responsible for the script and helped with production.
The cast in this was strong, and did alright with the characters. I actually liked pre-couch-jumping Tom Cruise in it, though I will not mind when Lestat is taken over by someone else for the newly announced Vampire Chronicles/Mayfair Witches AMC project. The accents are kind of whack, but you can easily ignore that part.
The DVD I have shows a little pre-movie interview with some of the actors, the director, and Rice herself, and talks about how you're fixin to watch a movie about the most depressing vampires you've ever heard of. That made me laugh.
This is definitely a classic vampire movie.

It's unashamedly sentimental and certainly won't be to everyone's tastes but when the news is full of horrible depressing stuff like racism and the bloody virus sometimes you just want a big warm hug of a film and this certainly delivers on that. Being British I am not familiar with Mr Rogers and the film is not really a biopic of him, more so the influence his positivity has on other people and the story concerns his relationship with a cynical journalist tasked with interviewing him whose struggling with family issues. You can see how it's all going to end up but it's a journey worth taking. Hanks is as charming and likeable as ever and the film left with me a big smile on my face and in this day and age that is always something to be thankful for.

Number 5 in my #top10 favourite films is 'Only God Forgives'
------------------------------------------
Very misunderstood and dripping in style from head to toe #OnlyGodForgives is such a stunningly #crafted film that i get #goosebumps from watching it every time. There may not be much dialog but every characters personality and past pain can flawlessly be seen and felt in facial expressions and acting alone. This combine with #beautiful cinematography and an intimidating/hostile atmosphere make for one of the most visually interesting, extremely rewarding and highly #depressing films I've ever seen. #Nicholaswindingrefn although #hated by many is my #favourite director of all time, his sheer ability to make me #feel a #deep #emotional connection using visuals and music alone is something I find absolutely #fascinating, #disturbing and extremely intoxicating. His films really are my favourite #drug.
