This X Marks an Enjoyable Story
This book has three stories intertwined to keep PI Kinsey Millhone busy. In the first, Kinsey and her landlord, Henry, get a new neighbor, who seems adept at manipulating Henry and, by extension, Kinsey. Meanwhile, Kinsey makes an interesting discovery while digging through the papers of a late PI for the man’s widow who is facing an IRS audit. Finally, Kinsey is asked to track down a recent parolee by the man’s birth mother.

I’m glad I didn’t read the official plot description before I read this book since it has major spoilers. Instead, I let these stories unfold and interweave as they would, and I got caught up in the book. I do think the stakes were a little low, but I still enjoyed spending time with Kinsey and the rest, including some appearances by recurring characters. One of the stories has a rushed ending, but the other two stories reach satisfactory conclusions for me. Yes, this could have been a little stronger, but I really enjoyed spending time with Kinsey in this book.

By and large, you know what you're getting with James Rollins Sigma Force novels (of which this is number 15!): a modern-day techno thriller, usually a race against time with dire consequences of failure, and linked to a mystery in the past.

This one is no different.

Having said that, I do have to say that these are also a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine!

This time around, the link to the past is the tale as told in Homer's (not *that* Homer! D'Oh!) Odyssey, when Odysseus and his crew spent years trying to get home again following the fall of Troy. What if the fantastical stories, and his journeys, all had their basis in fact?

Following a discovery of an ancient ship entombed in ice in a glacier in Iceland, and the cargo it carries, this sets the events (and the clock) ticking for this novel: events that sees Commander Grayson Pierce and his now-wife Seichan return from Maternity/Paternity leave in order to help out solving the mystery.

As usual, there's also a traitor or two ...

What starts off as a 'normal' story about a young woman and her foster kids, quickly becomes something completely different - with mysterious men popping up at unexpected times, new abilities being found, old abilities becoming stronger, and threats, to name but some.

With a new Discovery in every chapter, this book is very well written, with no editing or grammatical errors that I found. The chemistry between Nick and Kate jumps out from the page at you, but it is still unclear as to whether or not they will end up together. I loved the supporting cast of friends that turned up towards the end of the book.

This is an intriguing story, with no clear definition of 'good' and 'evil'. Are the good guys really good? Are the bad really as bad as they are made out to be? I don't yet know for sure, but one thing I do know is that I can't wait to read Exploration, the second book in this series.
