Good start
Paradise PD is about a small-town police department. They are a pretty useless bunch, from a policewoman with a fat fetish who sexually harasses an overweight policeman, to a police dog with a drug habit and a a rookie who is the son of the Police Chief.

"While everyone loves Bicycle Thieves, I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for DeSica’s heartbreaking film about an old man and his little dog. It is a great object lesson for the idea that you can deal with tremendous, unabashed, heartbreaking emotion and not be manipulative or schmaltzy."

Well it took me awhile to really get into this book. I was 4 or 5 chapters in before I was hooked, so to speak. Once the story really got rolling though I couldn't put it down. This book tells the story of 1 dog who passes several times & is constantly coming back as other dogs. He returns because he is trying to find his purpose. I'm happy to say that at the end of the book, he does just this...in heartbreaking fashion.
I found myself laughing at times & crying my eyes out at others. I definitely looked at my dog & gave him some extra attention as I read. This was a great book!

This is a beautifully written book: lyrical, haunting and it doesn't pull it's punches. There were moments when I didn't really want to read with my eyes open (the dog fight - I found that very distressing), but this family had me in its grip from start to finish. I loved how 'together' they were (the siblings, anyway), how they all fought to survive, even down to the dog, China and her puppies.
You know hurricane Katrina is coming, but when it arrives in all it's visceral fury, I was truly terrified for them.
I can see why this has won awards. I loved the writing style. I'm looking forward to reading more books by Ward.
