ClareR (5589 KP) rated Black and Blue in Books

This was a fantastic memoir about Parm Sandhu - the most senior woman of colour in the London Metropolitan Police at the time she retired. She’s clearly a woman with drive, determination and ambition. The discrimination that she had to deal with within the Met Police is both unbelievable and wholly believable (sorry, Met Police 🤷🏼♀️).
It was a book that flowed really well, and a quick read, even if it wasn’t an easy one in parts.

Emma @ The Movies (1786 KP) rated Baby Driver (2017) in Movies
Sep 25, 2019
I went to see Baby Driver this evening at an Unlimited Screening, the cinema was a great choice as the temperature was beyond ridiculous outside and at home. Evidently this is a prequel to Drive, or so I've been told. But I don't really know how that works when the idea supposedly came from a music video Wright did that was in 2003 and Drive was out in 2011... but anyway. As is always the way, the first big advert for the film was good, and honestly, I didn't feel like I was watching the same film when it started. Never the less, I enjoyed it. There are some quirks that I recognise from other Edgar Wright films, and I enjoyed the way the music was incorporated into the action... although him prancing down the street to get coffee... not so much.
Chris Hooker (419 KP) rated Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis in Books
Aug 5, 2018
This was listened to on audiobook on the drive from GA to NJ. It was a well told memoir and I am pretty sure the narrator was the actual author. It is a story about overcoming odds being stacked against you. This book made me think about things that need to be addressed if we ever expect things to get better overall in our country.
Chris Hooker (419 KP) rated Where Loyalties Lie(MidKnight Blue Series #3) in Books
May 1, 2018
I love the way Hancock writes and how well developed her characters are but this installment in the MidKnight Blue series seemed to lack the usual drive. All the amazing characters were there and I understand they are in flux. Just this book seemed more like an interlude than a truely developed story. Doesn't make it a bad book by any means just the plot was not as well driven as Hancock's other books although the chracters were still amazing.
Samuel Byrne (31 KP) rated Get Out (2017) in Movies
Apr 22, 2017
Clever storyline (5 more)
Some superb acting by main cast members
Efficient use of Suspense, Comedy and Horror
Uses undertones of Politics to drive the overall story and premise
A brilliant directorial debut for Jordan Peele
Ending was not obvious at all. Kept you in suspense until the last moment
Some twists felt obvious (1 more)
It just lacked a certain something to make this a perfect film
A politically powered Suspense Horror
Chris Hooker (419 KP) rated Safe Haven (Life After War, #3) in Books
Jan 12, 2018
In the third books of the [Life After War] series we learn more about Adrian's creation [Safe Haven]. They are beginning to prepare for a fight with the Mexican slavers but they have to deal with internal conflicts as well caused by Kenn's controlling nature.
The characters continue to drive the story and the way they interact keeps the plot interesting. I am looking forward to reading book 4, [Adrian's Eagles].

Suswatibasu (1701 KP) rated Mirror, Shoulder, Signal in Books

Slightly pointless story
I was intrigued to read this after it was nominated for a Man Booker Prize. The story hinges around a woman attempting to drive in Denmark and Sweden, and the various inadequacies that it conjured up. Being in the same position, I was empathetic with the protagonist but it seemed to lack a real plot and point to the entire novel. It is well written and the multiple sub-stories are intriguing but I failed to grasp what the author was trying to show.
Andy K (10821 KP) rated Starbucks in Apps
Feb 4, 2019
The Starbucks app is the greatest. I'm sure I don't use all the features within the app since I get the same thing every time I go there, but it is convenient. I don't understand why everyone who goes there does not use.
I feel a tad guilty when I walk past the long line and just walk in, pick up my beverage and walk out. Plus, who wants to wait in that massive drive thru line? Screw that.
Plus my venti, nonfat, no whip 2 1/2 pump mocha is heavenly.

Ezra Koenig recommended Low End Theory by A Tribe Called Quest in Music (curated)
The songs (1 more)
The complication of 70s artists
Fan favourite driving anthems
I won this in a contest, by far best decision ever. What a fantastic set of songs, I have it playing in my car the entire way to work and back. Starting my day with Mr, Blue Sky is always a fantastic start and ending with Guardians Inferno by David Hasselhoff. These classic anthems always bring a smile to my face during the long drive to and from work. Definitely a recommended compilation for all those who love the 70s, guardians, or even just enjoyable upbeat music. In these times of hardship, just remember, we...are...Groot!
