Rachel P (2 KP) rated The Selection in Books
Jan 4, 2018
The Selection follows America Singer as she is chosen as one of 35 girls who must compete to win over Prince Maxon. The book can be described as part Bachelor, part Cinderella, and part Divergent. It takes place in a dystopian society that uses a caste system. Of course, the prince is in the first caste, and America is in the fifth. The writing and storyline are not at all appealing to me, but I'm giving 2 stars because it was entertaining enough for me to finish, and it took my mind off school and studying for a few hours.

Strong yet imperfect protagonist (1 more)
"Beta" style male lead
Set the bar for YA dystopian
Does anything really NEED to be said that hasn't already been said about this series? We see many individual characters with both positive and negative traits. We see we see a relationship built and tested and questioned. We see "villains" who are also victims of a system. We see many negative aspects of our own world amplified to the point where it becomes blatantly obvious in the hopes that we may be able to change them.
Well done Collins.

Gary and Tanya smash it out the park again
once once again Gary Chudleigh and his artist of choice Tanya Roberts smash the sci-fi dystopian western genre out of the park.
I love the fact that plagued is a comic I can enjoy with my daughter. We both have very different takes on the story but can agree that we love what we are reading.
Part 1 was very strong but 2 is even stronger leading me to believe we could be in for a hell of a ride in part 3.
Love Plagued

The Chocolate Lady (94 KP) rated Vox in Books

(Thanks for the free book, @PRHGlobal/@prhinternational) What would you do if you were a woman in a world where your gender is so repressed, you are limited to speaking only 100 words a day, with painful consequences if you break that rule (literally)? Christina Dalcher’s first full-length novel starts out with this premise to build a dystopian society that feels like Atwood on steroids. To find out if that’s a good thing or not, you can read my review of “Vox: A Novel” in my latest book review on my blog here.

Well developed flawed protagonists who really come alive. (3 more)
Scarily believable future scape.
Feels like a warning without being preachy
Fantastically poignant ending
Ahead of his time. A must for sci fi fans
If you like science fiction read this. This is part of our history, part of the beginning. So much other great literature sprang from and was inspired by this novel.
Detailed believable culture and characters that despite living in the dystopian world created by Huxley are relatable and real. Flawed humans trying to find meaning to their existence.
No spoilers...just read it.
