An opulent and striking exploration of the oppressive nature of the male gaze, The Handmaiden does feel like it runs about 20 minutes too long, but honestly, the film’s finale is so wickedly satisfying that I didn’t mind Chan-Wook taking a bit longer

"Certainly Taxi Driver would be on the list, because it’s probably the greatest character study ever put on film, with some of the most surprising twists and turns. It also has such a perfect exploration of the feelings at the time of the mid-70s. Politically and socially, it just captures that time in an amazing way — captures New York, which is my home town, in an amazing way. It’s an incredible time capsule."

Crazy Rich Asians (2018) is crazy delightful. #Review
“Crazy Rich Asians” may open with some awful British racism, but it’s an effective shorthand way of introducing fearsome matriarch Eleanor Young (Michelle Yeo) and putting us firmly in the Young family’s corner. And it’s a necessary step too because we’re about to embark on a visually lavish exploration of the trials and tribulations of the lifestyles of the obscenely rich and wantonly famous, Singapore-style...

A complicated look at grief and change
This movie... Is hard to talk about. Not because it is poorly done, but because you feel so conflicted after you watch it. I was pretty disinterested in the beginning of this film, but once I reached the end of the film, I cried. The film feels a little disjointed and slow, but if you can get into it, it is a beautiful exploration of grief, love and change.

"A society on the brink of defiance and revolution, and a generation that’s sick and tired of being sick and tired. In some years and some countries, they riot. In 1990 America, they talk it out. Easily one of the most influential American films of the last twenty-five years, Richard Linklater’s exploration of bored youth is mesmerizing. This film would help its titular term become a phenomenon, as well as put Austin, Texas, on the cultural map."

"This is the lone book that doesn’t touch upon textile arts, but I would be remiss to not mention Princenthal’s exploration of the rise of gender-based art, born of an era of increased sexual violence against women. From Yoko Ono’s Cut Piece to Emma Sulkowicz’s 2014 piece Carry That Weight, Unspeakable Acts: Women, Art, and Sexual Violence in the 1970s looks at how women artists create work in response to living with the constant threat of sexual violence"

Trials of Passion
Trials of Passion is a thoroughly fascinating book that explores the insanity defense over time through the lens of four different crimes if passion. The authors expertise shines throughout. The effect of societal attitudes to gender and class and madness are fully explored and laid out. The primary flaw is that sometimes the writing is a bit clumsy.

The follow-on to Steelheart sees us (eventually) move city and become familiar with a new hierarchy of superheroes. I would have liked more exploration of the aftermath of Steelheart's defeat and the chaos that ensued before the search for Firefight begins.
The supers' weaknesses start to seem a little bit of a reach at times with no real tangible logic behind why they would be.
Again, some of the dialogue is a bit B-Movie and the characters too geeky/annoying.

This novel is truly amazing. The interpersonal relationships are detailed and vivid. The characters are extremely realistic and relatable. The plot is unique and the treatment of common situations in unconventional and unexpected ways is terrific. To me, the best part, is the exploration of pre-conceived notions of how one should feel and act, and how through time, shared experiences and personal growth, that changes and evolves. I loved it so much I will give a copy to my mother-in-law.
