Shaun Collins (3 KP) rated Doctor Who: Excelis Dawns in Books
Jan 12, 2018
What a conflux of good and bad this is. First the cast... Anthony Stuart Head is fantastic, and Katy Manning makes Iris a hurricane to deal with. Peter Davison raises his bemused Doctor to the occasion to deal with the two of them. The plot is interesting, and fun to listen to, (mainly due to the characters on display) but while it sets up Excelis to be interesting, it's not a place we really want to return to once this one is done. Great Sequel
Aliens, being the long standing sequel set 57 years later certainly gets the action going right away. Sigourney Weaver plays the character fantastic and James Cameron directs the film in his frenetic style. Love the mechs! The acting for the supporting cast isn't stellar but for science fiction it's workable. Clearly one of my more favorite movies. The score by James Horner was composed quickly but effectively. This gives us one of the best action cues of all time.

Fantastic War film (1 more)
Stylish and slick
Unexpected, Explosive rollercoaster of a film
Contains spoilers, click to show
Mel Gibson is back to form behind the camera in this War film of epic proportions. Standard is similar to Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket, but the second act outdoes Kubrick's with its intensity and full on violence portraying war. And boy once it starts it does not stop until the end.
I've never been a huge War movie fan but I must say I will quite happily revisit this film again at some point

Amazing Story and Gameplay
Combines amazing storytelling with amazing gameplay. I loved everything about this game because they got it right. They created a great world with fantastic characters. Just running around doing side quests showed how beautiful the various areas in the game are. It is so much fun to play and I love that there was so much diversity in the game and that it showed strong, smart women in leading roles.

Too short
A brilliant Discworld Book
This is a brilliant Discworld book written in typical Pratchett style. Death is a fantastic character, always one of my favourites, and this is full of humour relating to him. It's always good when a book can make you laugh out loud.
My only criticisms would be that Princess Keli is a slightly irritating character and the book itself just didn't seem long enough - I wanted more!
Highly recommended for anyone wanting to dip their toes into the Discworld waters.

This book wasn't all bad. I love a good crime mystery book. I just found parts of this one to be VERY predictable. The premise behind the book had potential...a victim in a domestic abuse case & connection to the mob & identity theft. The idea was fantastic, but the writing to my dismay lacked much substance. All in all this was a free book & I am glad I didn't pay for it! It wasn't a complete waste of time thanks to a twist I wasn't expecting, but the characters were pretty cliche.

They should've stopped after the 1st one
Okay for starters, isn't this called Salazar's Revenge?
Anyway they really need to stop making these films. The first one was fantastic, but they've gradually gone worse since then and this 5th film is really scraping the bottom of the barrel. It's ridiculously over the top even for Jack Sparrow, completely unfunny and mostly nonsense. I really didn't understand what was going on with the over the top CGI either with Salazar and his pirates, it looked awful.
I really hope this is the last one...

Berg and Wahlberg up the ante
Wahlberg teams up again with Peter Berg following their other recent collaboration, Deepwater Horizon and they both up their game with this movie. Wahlberg's performance is fantastic in this as a Boston cop dealing with a chaotic situation. The direction is also great and the sound design is well implemented. The film is upsetting at times, as it cover such a tragic event, but it is also uplifting and is something that the people of Boston should be proud of.

Fantastic historical crime thriller
It's a rarity to find a historical crime thriller based in a country other than the US, UK or Australia so this was a refreshing welcome. Abir Mukherjee does a fabulous job of bringing Kolkata to life and bringing in a protagonist who is sympathetic to the 'natives'.
As someone with roots in Kolkata and having lived there for many years, it was wonderful to remember the humdrum of India. And more importantly weaving in some of the hypocrisy found during colonialism to make it a realistic account.

Shyamalan back on form
Considering Shyamalan hasn't made a great film since Unbreakable, I really hadn't been expecting much from this and I'm pleased to say I was proved wrong.
This is a great return to form. James McAvoy puts in a fantastic turn as the multiple personalities, and the story itself is tense and interesting. The twist at the end was good, although I did find the general ending itself (prior to the twist) was a little disappointing but not enough to ruin the film.
