Suswatibasu (1703 KP) rated The Witchfinder's Sister in Books
Jul 26, 2017
A dark stain on human history
The story of Matthew Hopkins' sister is gripping from start to finish, almost gut-wrenching knowing what's to come. The witch trials in Britain are rarely documented unlike the trials of Salem. Hence reading this historical fiction almost brought the disgrace to life. You have pure empathy for the sister Alice, who attempts throughout to thwart her brother's evil plans. But it raises the question of complicity and innocence and how far gone Alice had crossed the line. Matthew's character is purely psychopathic, and he truly is a villain in every sense. A fantastic, detailed read.

Elizabeth Moss and Joseph Fiennes is fantastic
Masterful adaptation of Atwood's classic book
There was a lot riding on this TV show, more than 30 years after the original book came out. But it was unbelievably dark, even more so than the book, and completely adjusted for contemporary times. Attacking various structures where women have fought hard for their rights such as the workplace, LGBTQ rights, FGM and pro-choice - this series shows how the state can take those rights away and take control of women's bodies. Extremely grim viewing, it really is a difficult watch.

Intriguing setting with intriguing story
Well thought out world
A future classic
I first bought this book years ago when I was waiting for my bus. The cover had been peeking out at me and the blurb cried out. Information on it was scant but I had a feeling it was going to be good.
High Howey's impressive and, originally, self-published sci-fi is a must-read for fans of the genre. There are plenty twists and turns to keep you going and they become even more important the more you get through the series.

Brilliant acting
Krysten Ritter and David Tennant
Another brilliant Marvel TV series
Jessica Jones follows Daredevil as another Netflix original about a non-mainstream Marvel superhero. It also follows the same path that brings out the dark and gritty side of the Marvel universe. Not everything is black and white here, there's a lot of grey area and as a result the series poses a lot of questions you wouldn't get in the films.
Krysten Ritter is brilliant as Jones and is supported by a brilliant cast that includes David Tennant as the increasingly disturbing Kilgrave.

Class acting from David Tennant and Olivia Coleman (1 more)
The storylines are fantastic
Class series, a very good reason why it was adopted for American audiences
I devoured all three seasons of Broadchurch. It is beyond addictive and utterly gripping. The first two seasons hinge around the murder of a young boy, and how everyone becomes suspects around this tiny idyllic English town. While the third season is completely different, it does show some links to the previous seasons. The actors are incredible especially the grumpy senior detective David Tennant and the bubbly Olivia Coleman - the two are a match made in heaven.
Suswatibasu (1703 KP) rated Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) in Movies

Surprisingly good, intense beyond belief
My face at the end of this film was like being hit by a car! With a stellar cast, fantastic acting, and a storyline that is absolutely gasp-worthy, it is a great set up for the next film in the Star Wars saga. Felicity Jones is superb as the leading lady, totally understated, and totally kickass. The action is incredible, and I'm pleased to say there isn't any sign of Ja Ja Binks anywhere. As it's also the last appearance of Carrie Fisher, it's almost a homage to her life.

Reluctantly obsessed
My sister likes to subject me to cheesy af TV shows in the vein of paranormal romance. This was one of her choices and I hate to admit that this show doesn't completely suck. It is undoubtedly cheesy af, and the two main characters (Scott and Allison) aren't nearly as fantastic as the supporting cast (Stiles and Danny and Coach and Lydia) but at least I can distract myself by blissfully staring at the multitude of sculpted abs!

I was blown away by this show. I don't usually "binge" series, but I had this one done in two days and couldn't stop.
The humor permeates the whole show, sometimes up front, sometimes subtle.
The diverse cast did a fantastic job. The ending of the last episode was mind boggling.
It has an excellent main plot as well as a very engaging B and C plot.
It really maintains a real feeling of love and positive feeling for a place even if there are lots of dark things going on.
You have to watch it.

Good Book, Slow Start
I really enjoyed this book however it did start off slow. So slow in fact if it had not been recommend to me by a friend I probably would not have finished it. I was a good 200 pages in before the story picked up.
Once the story picks up the book is fantastic. The characters are all well thought out and interesting, but the star of this book is the circus. After reading this I wish the night circus was real so I could experience all of the beautifully described exhibits.

Hmm.... I've heard so much about this being the "greatest Batman and/or Joker comic ever written" and I'm left here like, ohhhhkkkaaaay, so what? The art is fantastic, but the story? I feel like it went nowhere. Or maybe just circled around. I don't know, but it was a major disappointment. I understand the parallels between The Joker and Batman, but the execution just wasn't there. I felt there was no humanity, and frankly it all felt very ho-hum and I felt no shock, no sadness or anger, or anything, just absolutely no emotions at all really.
