Fred (860 KP) rated The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy in Books
Mar 7, 2018
Let's just get it out of the way. This is my favorite book of all time. I've read it 8 times & will probably read it many more times, before my time is due. The book is smart, witty & genius. The characters are funny, quirky & silly. The story follows Arthur Dent, a human from Earth, which was just destroyed to make way for an intergalactic highway. He & his friend Ford, who unknown to Arthur, up to this point, is an alien. They hitch-hike aboard a Vogon ship at the last second before the Earth is destroyed. They are then kicked off the ship & wind up on the Heart of Gold, another ship which has an improbability drive. With this drive, the possibilities are endless. And from there, it just gets better. My favorite character is Marvin, the depressed robot. His negativity of everything & unenthusiastic way mirrors my own views on many things. But some of the best parts in the book are of the book within the book, The Hitch-hiker's Guide to the Galaxy, which is sort of a Galactic Encyclopedia. Except it says DON'T PANIC in large letters on the cover. Entries on poetry & even the creation of the universe are hilarious. And Earth's entry "Mostly Harmless". Anyway, highly recommended. READ IT!

I really wish that I loved this book as much as I loved it in middle school. I guess science fiction/fantasy really is not my favorite type of book. I found that I was bored quite a lot with this book.
I have realized that I struggle with books when they are logical. I like my emotional books. The logical nature of this novel seemed dull to me. I did like the plot line, I just did not enjoy the writing style.
All in all, this book kept me entertained. It is a good mix between science fiction and fantasy, however, it falls too much to the science fiction side that I had a hard time enjoying the novel.

I loved these stories !
I especially was excited to read this book because some of my favorite authors are involved. I want to thank Barbour for having the creative foresight to know that sometimes I just want to read about a certain subject or location. It makes it that much easier to satisfy my craving :)
The stories in this book were great :) I loved all the various different ways the authors used to imagine preachers getting their brides. It was wonderful. I highly recommend this book and have actually bought a physical copy for myself.
I volunteered to read this book from Barbour Publishing Group in return for my honest feedback. the thoughts and opinions expressed with in are my own.

Cori June (3033 KP) rated Retribution Falls (Tales of the Ketty Jay, #1) in Books

This book was good. There are some rough spots here and there which does start to iron out in the next books as his writing style develops. I'm slightly glad this wasn't my introduction to the Katy Jay crew as it didn't really have many of my favorite people (Silo, who does become more prominent as the book series goes on, and Harkens who has a great overall character arc) so I'd recommend you read this book last or later as a way to answer questions you had that the other books didn't quite get into. (I read it 3rd). Frey is the least likable in this book.
Jenny Houle (24 KP) rated Downward Dog, My Dreams & Fears: Haiku & Illustrations by Martin in Books
Jan 13, 2018
I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley for an unbiased opinion.
I cannot remember the last time a book of poetry made me laugh out loud. DOWNWARD DOG was absolutely entertaining, at least from the point of view of this dog lover. There are even one or two more serious haikus to balance out the ones that make you laugh. I'm pretty sure my own dog thinks much like Martin does.
My absolute favorite from the book:
"Shame: all the food has
vanished before I notice
I started eating"
Put this on your gift list for any dog lover. Absolutely adorable.

A book no matter your age you just want to jump right into.
How I've made it to almost 30 years old without reading this book I will never know I grew up on the movie it was my dad and my brother's favorite movie and we had it on constantly in the house. I really wanted to start this year with a fun and easy read and something that's been on my to be read list for most of my life and in the end I really did enjoy it it was super fun and quirky and from beginning to end just a really great book.
Dana (24 KP) rated Alice in Zombieland - White Rabbit Chronicles in Books
Mar 23, 2018
I really enjoyed this book. There was just enough action and romance in it. A lot of people may say that they don't like it because it has nothing to do with Alice in Wonderland (which is one of my all time favorite books) but it is the subtle hints at the characters from Alice in Wonderland that make it awesome. It is not a remake of a classic, but an amazing telling of a story with characters who may have some of the same traits as the originals. Alice Bell is strong, independent, courageous and faithful, just like Alice from Caroll's book. I highly recommend this book.
Dana (24 KP) rated Bunnicula Meets Edgar Allan Crow (Bunnicula, #7) in Books
Mar 23, 2018
I remember reading this book when I was a kid in elementary school, found it in my local used book shop, and had to pick it up. Not going to lie, I used to be terrified of these books, but I still read them because I secretly loved being scared. Rereading it, it was a fun book with so many Poe allusions (which were amazing since he is my favorite Poe-t, lol). I can say for a fact I liked these books much more when I was a child, but it was still fun to revisit my childhood books. So, yeah, nostalgic read number three of the year.
