ClareR (6067 KP) rated Small Worlds in Books

Small Worlds by Caleb Azumah Nelson is an intensely emotional coming of age story, of a Ghanaian Londoner called Stephen.
As a young black man, Stephen feels safety in his small worlds: music, family and friends. And then there is outside those worlds where Stephen feels less safe: places in London where there is brutality or unrest, and University, which is where he really doesn’t want to be, as it’s so far from his friends and family - and his world.
Stephen needs these constants in his life, and when it’s taken away, he’s lost.
Stephen goes to Ghana to see the people and places of his parents youth, and it’s here that he finds some connection with those he loves. When he goes home, he’s able to come to terms with those people he has lost and rebuild relationships.
This was a really moving novel that made me really think about the challenges of culture, family, race and policing in London (in particular).
Recommended.

Andrew Furlong (14 KP) rated Star Trek V - The Final Frontier (1989) in Movies
Sep 27, 2017
It has a few good character moments (2 more)
Jerry Goldsmith returns for another excellent score
It's never boring
Shatner takes the director's chair and his ego often gets the best of him. (2 more)
Storyline is confused and often overindulgent
Comedy often falls flat
It's... something
While I would say it's more interesting than it's reputation it's not a good movie. It very much feels like a vanity project by Shatner and the story suffers for it.

Original idea (1 more)
Good effects for the budget
Full throttle action
A decent indie film experienced entirely in first person view point of the main character. It does feel a bit like a call of duty video game but cranked up to maximum action and speed. The action scenes are crazy as is plot. Along with the thumping sound track this film feels like a roller coaster for the eyes and ears. Definitely worth checking out!

Good action scenes (2 more)
Quite lighthearted
Links well after Capt America Civil War
A decent entry bringing Spiderman into the Marvel universe
A good film with some big action scenes and Michael Keaton does well as the villian. Ties in nicely with the Avengers films but maybe had too many references to them. I still prefer the first Spiderman film (2002) but this a good film overall.
Alison Pink (7 KP) rated Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald in Books
Jan 15, 2018
Oh my goodness! What an awesome book! Zelda Fitzgerald is a fascinating series of contradictions. This book is a work of fiction but it feels so real based on the popular myths of Zelda & Scott. You feel for both of them through the whole book. At times you despise each of them yet, in the next instant, you root for them like its no ones business. What an excellent, entertaining read.

The VR works well (2 more)
Races can be enjoyably tense
Has online play
Steering feels stiff (2 more)
Very bland track design
Extremely overpriced
Like any other kart racer we want interesting levels, tight controls and fun power ups. VR Karts doesn't deliver any of that. The VR is welcome but without it, there would be literally no reason to own this.

Slay Demi!
Demi has out done herself! Her vocals on this album were so powerful and well confident! I love that Demi now feels comfortable and confident in her own skin an was ready to share that with us. She got real with us about her feelings and made each song feel very personal. That is the mark of a true artist right there.
