I love how the author came up with such a creative way to take the cat cafe on the road. The murder took a bit of time to happen, but there was enough set up I didn’t find my interest waning. Maddie seemed to abandon her responsibilities a bit more than normal to investigate, but we got some good twists along the way to a logical if rushed climax. I was bothered by a couple needless misandrist comments that were irrelevant to the story. There were also a couple of glitches that I couldn’t tell if were poor editing or unclear writing. I appreciated how many series regulars we got, although one subplot with them wasn’t developed as well as it felt like it should have been. While there were lots of small things that annoyed, overall, I did enjoy this entry in the series.

It follows the lives of Efe and Sam, best friends from school who get married and have a child. Efe is reluctant to become a mother and is pressured into doing so by her family and Sam. She has unresolved childhood trauma, and pregnancy/ motherhood does nothing to help her get over that. She is a woman suffering under the weight of all the things other people expect her to do. There’s the odd moment where Eve does what she wants, but cultural expectations seem to be the winner in all this.
There’s a lot of lead up too this point where we get to know Efe and Sam and the reasons why they make their later choices. It’s a frustrating read at points, but then other people’s choices lives can be just that when their choices are different to those that you imagine you would take in their place! It’s always good to look at the other side, I think.
Efe and Sam are people who would have benefitted from counselling, parenting classes and more support!
Be prepared for a very sad ending, though - tissues at the ready!

I liked this a lot more than I thought I would I mean Garret is just yum!! This is such a sweet and easy to read story about a single mum fighting through life when she meets a new neighbour. A good read.

Bowie is the literal thinker of the PAs and has a traumatic past. He desperately wants to be loved, but doesn't think he is worthy of it. As for Kari, he's attracted to Bowie, but keeps his distance as he doesn't want to force anything. That is, until Bowie's "boyfriend" steps over the line and hurts Bowie. Then Kari will do whatever he can to ease Bowie's pain.
Although Daddy is mentioned in the blurb, it's quite light on the Daddy side. It is more about the emotions and relationship goals, not only for Bowie and Kari, but also how others can affect them. For Bowie, it was also bout having the confidence in his found family to understand they will accept him, no matter what, and he really is worthy of love.
This was a great read that I thoroughly enjoyed and absolutely recommend.
