Family Drama and Murder
Dr. John Bhatt is getting married to Emily, a woman he met while home visiting in India. Emily’s family, such as it is, live in Coatesworth Manor, not too far from Mallowan Hall, and the entire staff has been given time off to attend if they wish. Of course, Phyllida Bright has been involved with helping to plan it, which is why she is on hand to witness some of the dynamics in Emily’s extended family. While things have been tense, Phyllida doesn’t expect murder, but after the happy couple depart, someone turns up dead. Can Phyllida figure out what happened?

While the book took a bit of time with the setup, the mystery delivered in spades. I was turning pages as quickly as possible at one point, and I was surprised by the climax. This ode to romantic triangles in Agatha Christie’s books did inflict Phyllida’s personal life, which I found annoying. The returning characters continue to entertain, and I really hope we see something come from what was set up here. And the suspects developed as the book went along, which made it easy to keep them straight. Now that I’ve caught up on this series, I am going to have to wait to see what happens next to Phyllida and the rest of the regulars.

I really got stuck into this family saga from Daphne du Maruier, following five generations of a family and their relationship with the mine at Hungry Hill. With du Maurier you know there's going to be tragedy in there somewhere and there are senseless deaths and senseless happenings a plenty. Despite being beautifully written, I felt somewhat depressed at the end of the novel because I didn't feel it was concluded very well and a lot of very bad things happened to people who frankly didn't deserve it! I feel John-Henry's story wasn't properly tied up and he was just left almost hanging there. The Donovans also seem to come out of things rather well despite their atrocious, murdering behaviour! I think I'm one who likes a good bit of poetic justice in my reading as real life is so unfair to some people!

So, brilliantly written, but I'm not sure I'd want to put myself through reading it again, with all the agonies and the ending which I found unsatisfactory.

A crazy premise delivers a memorable dark thriller.
Written from the husband’s perspective (it seems like ages since I read a book with only one POV and I found it very refreshing) we get the view into the protagonist’s family life with his wife, estate agent Millicent and two teenage kids. From the outside, they look like a supernormal family, but he and Millicent are hiding some pretty dark stuff and when it starts to look like it may all come out the level of crazy to protect their way of life jumps to a whole other level. With a narrator who is by no means a boy scout, we get a front-row seat into how to justify the unjustifiable to yourself.

I loved the writing in this book and was fully engaged in what wasn’t a super fast-paced book. I think I’ve been reading way too many thrillers as once again I guessed the main twist way too early for my liking but it was still an enjoyable ride. I can see this being a great thriller movie.
