The Dragon Token ( Dragon Star #2)
By Melanie Rawn
⭐️⭐️⭐️
A generation of peace among the Sunrunners has been shattered by a seemingly unstoppable invasion force. Now the time has come to fight back. Prince Pol and Maarken, his most valued general, must rally their forces in a desperate bid to halt the faceless army.
I have to admit I found this one a bit of a struggle at time. We are coming from the death of Rohan and war is raging. They are fleeing from the desert and fighting to stay alive. This book certainly didn’t shy away from a kill count with a few shocks. But it completely dried up for until we hit the last 6 chapters. I usually love this series and I will continue as I’m completely invested and really need to see this come to a conclusion. Oh the New High prince Pol is certainly trying to find his feet.

When you think of Moses (in film, that is), you probably think of Charlton heston in 'The 10 Commandments'.
Not a former-Batman in the lead role.
Yet that is exactly what this is, with Christian Bale taking on the lead role in a film that portrays Moses as more of a General than any other I have come across.
All the key elements of the story are here: Moses's heritage (NB, the film starts without him knowing such), his wanderings, the burning bush, the plagues of Egypt, the Passover, the parting of the Red Sea and the Ten Commandment, with the film going to great pains to, shall we say, 'muddy the waters' somewhat in just what is going on, with OT God being portrayed as a youngster and also only appearing to Moses after he hits his head and being invisible/inaudible to any others.
Which is a choice, to say the least.
Still, this is an enjoyable enough flick!

Hmmm ... I've got to admit that I struggled with this book. I finished it but only just and only with a bit of skim reading along the way.
What I liked about it: the setting and the general creepiness.
What I didn't like about it: the main character ... well, actually, most of the characters if I'm honest, the repetitive nature of some of the story, the dream sequences, lack of anything much happening most of the time and whilst the "mystery" was intriguing in the beginning, the twist was, for me, pretty obvious.
I'm sorry I didn't enjoy this as much as I was hoping but I guess you can't please everyone all of the time and there are plenty of very positive reviews for this book so if it sounds like your kind of story, give it a go.
Thank you to HQ and NetGalley for enabling me to read and share my thoughts of The Wilderness Retreat.

Quality content (4 more)
Great community
Highly engaging
Skilled gameplay
Daily content
Livestreamer from his mums basement!
Having watched Stonemountain64 for many years now I have watched him grow from a YouTube only content creator to a Livestreamer alongside YouTube and various other social media platforms.
He led the charge as the first known serious streamer to move his Live stream content to Facebook gaming and has continued to grow year on year with live viewership growing from a few hundred each stream to routinely over 10k now.
With the team surrounding him and 6 days of live streams he is able to put put quality content regularly on his YouTube channel for those that miss live streams, want to watch the funny clips, catch ups or general gameplay.
His community is, by and large positive and friendly as is the man himself.
A top quality content creator that is well worth a watch.

Unlikeable characters (2 more)
Very short
A massacre of ideas
Nothing new
Thought I'd give this a go as it's been a while since the previous versions. Other than setting it in the current time with influencers and current technology, this offers nothing new. Just a bunch of unlikeable characters to the predictable slaughter.
Following on the recent Halloween films trend of making a sequel to the original set decades later. We have a cameo from the original film final girl who has gone Linda Hamilton bad ass up for revenge. With some real T2 elements in some scenes. A very weak plot line as she and leatherface must be in their 70's now as nearly 50 years have passed from the original.
Gore fans will probably like it and fans of TCM films in general, for others there is no real depth to it and full of Slasher film clichés. Shame as it had potential but ends up a bit of a mess.

The author/publisher provided a free copy of the book for review purposes - thank you! Receiving a review copy does not guarantee a positive review and therefore do not affect the opinion or content of the review.
So when I sat down to write my review for The Phantom Forest, all I wanted to write is this:

Protect this character

Seriously, protect this character

Take them away from Liz Kerin; it's the only way to protect them

But uh, that doesn't work as a review (maybe one day). Anyways.
The Phantom Forest is haunting.
Kerin's debut is creepy, everyone. The world here is atmospheric and brings a chill or two, even when the story isn't in the Underworld. In a world ruled by the Coalition where one practicing their belief in gods or superstition results in death, General Simeon overlooks a village with tight control. He keeps the people under his authority by taking a religious ritual where only criminals are sacrifices to one where anyone can be chosen.
I wanted General Simeon to choke on sharp pineapples while reading.
Since her father died, Seycia lives in hiding with her younger brother Miko in the village. It's not long before General Simeon makes her a target and she becomes the next village sacrifice, sending her to the Underworld where she joins forces with Haben.

Interesting Characters Arcs

I find myself most invested in Haben's story and wanted to keep reading to find out what happens to Seycia and him as they journey across the Underworld. While The Phantom Forest has a multitude of POVs, most are from Seycia, Haben and Miko.
The story seems to focus on one character with the others sitting in the backseat, undergoing the most development. However, I do feel this is only the beginning, and there is more to come for both Seycia and Miko. Their story seems to stand in the back of the room, but they'll likely develop in future books. I want to see what Kerin has in store even if I only want to protect Haben.

There are slow moments in The Phantom Forest

Kerin builds a world and plot that captures my attention from early in the novel. However, there are moments where I felt the scenes were maybe irrelevant and unnecessary. While it was a rough patch to go through, it was well worth it. I wanted to see to the end of the story, and I had a lot of questions that won my curiosity. By the end of The Phantom Forest, I still have plenty of questions, but I'm sure there will be answers eventually.
