Office Space crossed with Battle Royale
So it's obvious where this film has drawn it's inspiration from, and I think it may have gone a little too far with the Battle Royale similarities.

Still, it was nowhere near as bad as I expected. Yes it was mostly predictable, but it was brilliantly bloody and gory and still managed to raise a few laughs. The ending wasn't great, but it was still fairly enjoyable and it was refreshing to see a film not even attempting to push the 2 hour barrier and drag on for far too long like most tend to do now.

Spoilt by the ending
I absolutely loved this film when it first came out, probably because I was far too young to be watching it. But watching it back now, it’s a bit of a disappointment.

Plot wise it’s fairly straight forward and probably not entirely original, but you can’t really go wrong setting a horror film in an old asylum. That alone gives you the creeps. It’s quite funny and also very bloody and gory, and Geoffrey Rush does fairly well channeling his inner Vincent Price. Sadly Jeffrey Combs is a very underused though. My main issue with this film is that the ending really lets it down. It goes a bit bonkers and strays a little too far away from the asylum/mad doctor premise, and whilst I understand the ending and what they were trying to get at, for me they should’ve gone down a different route.

A goldmine BUT
Last night a conversation on the way home about children’s tv shows was completed by a walk down memory lane courtesy of YouTube who allowed us to listen to our favourite tv theme tunes.

Ads are far more prevalent than they were.

Everyone thinks they can be a YouTube star - NEWSFLASH they can’t

Watching a video about training dogs and suddenly some very disturbing scenes appeared (thankfully YouTube acted swiftly and the explicit scenes were gone)

I am incredibly impressed with the amount of research that must have gone into this book, for politics, military strategy, engineering, physics, and more. That being said, to me the most important thing is characters and I think they fell a little short on this one. Parts of the plot were a little confusing and hard to follow as well. Jia's struggle for power/efforts to unite the throne seemed silly and it was difficult to see the political accumen involved. I was also surprised at how cold and calculating she became. The plot started off rather slow and seemed to end too soon with a lot happening far too quickly at the end. Ultimately this book read more like the first in a series with The Grace of Kings as a prequel. Nevertheless, I still admire the work that went into this book and the brilliance behind the ideas.
