Full of action, suspense, gritty scenes and loads of tension, this is a great read that I thoroughly enjoyed despite this being the third instalment of this series but the first I have read. It does work as a standalone but I think it would be even better had I read the other 2 beforehand.

The characters are strong, as are the storylines which made things fast-paced and interesting which had me totally immersed from the start. The writing style is easy to read and although told from different points of view, I didn't find it hard to keep up and, in fact, felt this enhanced my reading experience.

The only thing I have to complain about is myself!! Why haven't I come across the first 2 in the series before? I must have been walking around with my eyes closed!

Thank you to Orion Publishing Group and NetGalley for my advance copy in return for an honest, unbiased and unedited review.

Mercedes Benz by Janis Joplin

Track

"My Mum played me Janis Joplin for the first time one night when I was 14 or 15 and I was just ‘This is a woman?! Oh my god! What?! I didn’t know that a woman could sound like this!’ That was quite life changing and it totally changed my perception of what you had to be as a female singer. It was such a breath of fresh air, because I’d listened to so much pop and this was my first experience of a woman singing in a completely different way. It broke boundaries for me and it opened different doors, because I was suddenly ‘Oh, you don’t have to just be this one thing.’ “I guess that ‘Mercedes Benz’ was more of a ditty and it wasn’t the perfectly constructed song. I think it’s just really playful; music is really playful and singing can just be funny and downplayed, but this song is also raw, it’s so fucking raw and gritty."

Sarah J Maas knows how to create a badass! Selina is definitely a strong, capable, gritty, independent woman with no need for a man (or Batwing). I thoroughly enjoyed Catwoman through Maas' eyes - I probably should have read the other DC books (and I still might), but I couldn't wait to delve into SJM's mind once again. Reading about the "villain", making her into a relatable person with a sympathetic history, was especially interesting. I have never personally read any hero comics and, though I've watched several Batman movies, I certainly wouldn't call myself a fanatic - but this was a new experience in which I have no regrets! The story had action (lots of girl power, good versus evil, butt-whipping action), it had a hint of romance (which kept my romantic heart aflutter) and definitely had some feels to go along with it. Glad I chose something so different from my normal read!
