Bohan Reviews (215 KP) rated Halloween (1978) in Movies

It does have a lot of the campy qualities that are so infamous in regards to the horror movies of the 70s and 80s, but the film also succeeds in developing such an effective sense of horror and tension that it’s easy to see how it spawned countless sequels and an entire genre of horror films.

Trick or Treat
It's been 40 years since Michael Myers went psycho, killing his family on Halloween night, leaving only one survivor, his sister Laurie. Locked up in an institution, Myers manages to escape when his bus transfer goes horribly wrong.
Laurie knows it's only a matter of time before another showdown when word of Michael's Escape surface's - but this time, she's ready for him.

Watched as part of my countdown to Halloween next weekend what makes a good scary movie doesn't always need gore or some psycho with a knife sometimes u can get with jump scares noises the unknown and this movie just uses that and it works effectively ethan hawke holds the movie together hopefully the sequel later in the weekend just to see what happens next

Tenth Halloween sequel is the eleventh film in the Halloween series and the third to actually be called Halloween; I'm sure there must have been a less confusing way of organising this but clearly no-one could be bothered to find it. Anyway: this film disregards all the previous sequels, allowing them to bring Jamie Lee Curtis back from the dead (again) and ignore all that stuff about occult curses and long-lost siblings in attempt to take the film back to the core notion of an unstoppable force of pure evil with a big knife and a William Shatner mask.
And it works rather well, although the decision to essentially turn Laurie Strode into Sarah Connor from Terminator 2 inevitably shifts the tone of the film somewhat. Many pleasingly tense sequences, and some clever and respectful call-backs to the original film. The ongoing characters are effectively presented although most of the new ones don't make much of an impression. In the end this feels much more like a reverent act of homage than the kind of horror film we usually get in 2018; whether this is a good thing or not is probably a matter of personal taste. I imagine this will keep most people quite happy until the next sequel or reboot comes along.

Partying with a Corpse or Three
This Halloween, we are being treated to another novella collection with these three cozy mystery authors as they feature their series sleuths. First up, Lucy Stone finds a dead body after a haunted house fund raiser. Then, Hayley Powell’s Halloween party in her new restaurant ends with the discovery of a corpse in the freezer. Finally, when Julia Snowden’s niece finds herself at a high school party, Julia goes to bring her home, only for the police to discover a dead body in the shed out back.
Out of these three authors, I only regularly read Barbara Ross’s Maine Clambake mysteries, so that story, featuring Julia Snowden, was my favorite. That’s not to say I didn’t enjoy all three of the novellas. All three feature a strong assortment of characters and a solid mystery. Even if I figured out a part of the story early, I didn’t have it all pieced together until the end. My only complaint was the politics brought into the first novella in the collection. Even then, I’m a bit torn since it did play a part in the story while also feeling like I was reading a lecture. Still, if you are in the mood for a murderous Halloween party, you’ll be glad you picked up this novella collection.
