The best Star Trek on TV
When CBS announced that a new Star Trek series would be coming in 2017, they should have made it clear it wasn't anything THEY were making. But they didn't have Star Trek alumni like Brannon Braga or actual fans (or just people who've ever watched Star Trek) like Seth MacFarlane making their programs.

The Orville is a return to the optimistic exploration of the human condition that made Trek great, featuring social commentary (About a Girl, Krill, Majority Rule), hard sci-fi (Pria, New Dimensions), and a mixture of the both (Mad Idolatry).

I would like, if I may, to take you on a strange journey.
It's hard to describe a movie like Rocky Horror. A musical, sci-fi, horror, comedy?!? Well yes, but that doesn't do it justice. It is an experience..... no, I mean it. Ask the thousands of fans who still flock to midnight showings, dressed up as their favorite characters, ready to do the time warp again. So why to we enjoy this adventure of Brad Majors and his fiancee Janet Weis? Because! We don't need to explain ourselves to you. So, come up to the lab, and see what's on the slab. I see you shiver with antici............ pation

Great Scott! What an excellent review! Perchance were you one of the midnight revelers? I spent nearly every weekend of High School doing the Time Warp at The Vogue Theater, dressed in a bustier, getting, garter belt, and fishnet stockings. Sometimes both Friday and Saturday viewings. I inducted many a virgin to the Rocky Horror experience. What a blast those days were.

Offbeat British sci-fi has a more than usually absurd plot but partly makes up for it with the usual virtues of inventiveness and sheer hard work (quality British actors keep very straight faces). Once the usual stuff with boffins and meteorites is out of the way, there's a definite attempt to bring something of the sensibility of the seedy British crime film into play, fairly successfully. Quite often this film is just a bit cleverer, funnier, and darker than you would expect. Doesn't stop the plot being quite so ridiculous, or the climax being a damp squib, but fun to watch regardless. (The garish colourised version in circulation is distractingly horrid; watch it in black and white if you can.)

This is a big game, bigger than the first one and it is great. Aloy has grown a lot as a person and the cool thing is her friends join her for the adventure as well as new friends. The side quests are great and the main story is quite interesting with some hard sci-fi mixed with great storytelling elements. There's new machines too and it's so much fun finding them. There's photo mode in the game also which is amazing. I enjoyed just exploring everywhere. I did everything in the game and I absolutely loved it. It's very clear this is meant to be a trilogy and the story in this sequel sets up for the third game nicely. It's a fantastic game and well done.

I had a hard time deciding how to rate this book at first because of the subject matter. The story is somewhat more disturbing than what I normally read, but it is a murder mystery as well as sci-fi, so you have to expect some unpleasantness. There are some terrible people doing terrible things. There are also some not so terrible, everyday people accepting, and occasionally even enjoying, terrible things. The worst (or best depending on how you look at it) part of it all is how believable everything is. In the end though, I did enjoy the book and decided that it deserves 4 stars. It is a very well thought out and well-written story that kept me listening every minute I could until it was finished.

Terminator Salvation (2009)
Terminator Salvation (2009)
2009 | Action, Mystery, Sci-Fi
The Visuals Keep Getting Better
In the fourth installment of the Terminator franchise, human savior John Connor leads the resistance against the threat of the machines who are trying to enslave and obliterate the earth.

Acting: 10
You can do worse than throwing Christian Bale and Sam Worthington into a movie. Both pack strong performances that are enough to carry this sci-fi movie through the duration. They bring an extra passion to the role, raw emotion you don’t otherwise see in the machines they are fighting against.

Beginning: 10

Characters: 10

Cinematography/Visuals: 10

Conflict: 10
Action is consistent and rips through the screen with a number of gunfights and man-to-robot combat scenes. I will admit, I was confused at times at what was actually going on and who I should be rooting against/for, but it somehow didn’t deter the high-impact sci-fi goodness that unfolded throughout. These scenes kept the otherwise sinking movie afloat.

Entertainment Value: 8
Sure the action is good, I just wished they had focused that same energy on shoring up the storyline. If you haven’t seen any of the previous films you have no shot at understanding this. Even if you have, it took me awhile to truly figure out what was what. Definitely took a bit away from the entertainment factor for me.

Memorability: 7
There are quite a few cool moments that stick out in my head, but nothing that made the movie over-the-top amazing. If nothing else, I admire the movie’s effort to stand out, but when you look at other films in the genre like Edge of Tomorrow, you think, “They have a lot of work to do.” Good? Sure. Classic? Nope!

Pace: 10

Plot: 6

Resolution: 1

Overall: 82
Terminator Salvation sees a lot of things happen…that seemingly mean nothing in the grand scheme of the movie. Things are pretty confusing early which makes it hard to fully buy into the movie. But the score is the score because it’s going to satisfy most of the sci-fi action junkies out there that live for these kind of movies. it won’t make history, but it’s one of those movies where you leave saying, “This’ll do.”

Book Favorite

"Octavia Butler is one of my top favorite authors, and my favorite sci-fi writer of all time. Her writing is always at the intersection of race, class — and in this instance, vampires. I love fantastical things, and because this focuses on vampires and not humans it adds another element of imagination. In the book, she’s having a conversation about racism, but through vampires, and you just never know where that’s going to go. You’re reading it, reading it, reading it, and then it takes a hard left, and you’re like Oh shit, I didn’t realize we were going to go into these deep political topics. Even though she always does that in her books. I’ve read pretty much all of them, but this was my favorite. She died pretty soon after she wrote it, so it has a lot of sentimental value for me."
