Finding Steve McQueen (2019)
Finding Steve McQueen (2019)
2019 | Crime, Romance
The film stars Travis Fimmel (Raised by Wolves), Rachael Taylor (Jessica Jones), William Fichtner (Armageddon) and Academy Award winner, Forest Whitaker (Last King of Scotland) and is directed by Mark Steven Johnson (Daredevil, Ghost Rider).

Based on the true story of the Youngstown mob, President Richard Nixon, the FBI, and the biggest bank heist in US history! In 1972, a gang of like-minded thieves plan a heist to steal $30 million in illegal campaign contributions from the President’s secret fund.

When it comes to a heist movie Finding Steve McQueen is undoubtedly one that is fun to watch, the true comedy element comes from Travis Fimmel’s Harry Barber character who was obsessed with McQueen hence his look and name change, the film takes on the journey of the heist as series of flashbacks as Harry tells Molly (Rachel Taylor) “the truth”, this is how we get introduced to Enzo Rotella (William Fichtner) the boss of the heist, I have to say that when it comes to Fitchner he always pulls off a great performance and he plays the character great as he tries to hold the mismatch of a team together.

"I love that Jules Dassin took an archetype like the mentor and turned him into the main character. One of the greatest heist films I’ve ever seen, Rififi employs character for the sake of plot progression, resulting in a unique economy of filmmaking. Pure entertainment. Plus, the details: padding a hammer not leaving matches or cigarette butts during a heist, catching debris with an umbrella. And that’s just one scene."

Superb
This heist film ticked a lot of my boxes. Coming somewhere between the slickness of Ocean's Eleven and the bumbling idiocy of the wonderful Welcome to Collinwood, it gets the balance between genius planning and blind luck just right. As with any heist film, things go wrong, things get fixed and a scapegoat is found.
Brilliant cast, with the exception of Hillary Swank who basically chews the scenery.

Quick read
I received this in December 2018 Fairyloot box.

In this novel, we meet Sky. Sky and her family are wyverns, who mix with humans but also have their own schools etc. In order to impress and go anywhere int he world or BE anyone of status, you need to be able to steal gold. At the beginning of the novel, Sky's mother has gone.nissing following a failed heist, presumed dead by everyone but Sky, get father and brothers. The family have been shunned from the community as a result, and Sky's now ex-boyfriend publicly humiliated her by dumping her and making everyone aware of his thoughts.

But Sky doesn't care about that. Well she does, but she just wants her mother back.

I was pleasantly surprised by this, as the first 50 or so pages felt very "meh" nd I was debating DNF'ing it. In a way, I'm pleased I didn't, as there was such a quick change of events and pacing in the book around chapter 16 (not sure of page number) that kept me hooked until the bitter end.

Definitely something to read if you like dragons, gold and quick reads.

Underrated heist movie from Steven Soderbergh. Impressive cast, great humor, ridiculous set-ups with lots of twists and turns. Should have been titled "Danny Ocean at the Races". (0 more)

Soderbergh has "retired" from making movies, but it really seems like he retired from following the rules of the studio system.

Great heist film
A very good action film that's clearly influenced by Heat. Probably the best cops & robbers film since then. It has a similar overall feel if not matching it.

A good follow up, more of the same really although parts of the heist you have to pay a lot of attention to understand. Lacks the charm of the first but still fun.
