Looking for some new books. Anyone got a good suggestion? I tend to like sci-fi/fantasy and need high quality writers!

@E. Tabler I tend toward high fantasy, LitRPG, tech, futuristic and apocalypse but am willing to try any well-written author. I love what of Sanderson I have read thus far.

I have much love for world War Z and the Furies of Calderon series by Jim Butcher. World War Z is completely different then the movie. Here is the blurb on Furies, “For a thousand years, the people of Alera have united against the aggressive and threatening races that inhabit the world, using their unique bond with the furies - elementals of earth, air, fire, water, and metal. But now, Gaius Sextus, First Lord of Alera, grows old and lacks an heir. Ambitious High Lords plot and maneuver to place their Houses in positions of power, and a war of succession looms on the horizon." "Far from city politics in the Calderon Valley, the boy Tavi struggles with his lack of furycrafting. At fifteen, he has no wind fury to help him fly, no fire fury to light his lamps. Yet as the Alerans' most savage enemy - the Marat - return to the Valley, he will discover that his destiny is much greater than he could ever imagine." Caught in a storm of deadly wind furies, Tavi saves the life of a runaway slave named Amara. But she is actually a spy for Gaius Sextus, sent to the Valley to gather intelligence on traitors to the Crown, who may be in league with the barbaric Marat horde. And when the Valley erupts in chaos - when rebels war with loyalists and furies clash with furies - Amara will find Tavi's courage and resourcefulness to be a power greater than any fury - one that could turn the tides of war.”

Wonderful high fantasy rpg
I love this game. It has a wonderfully out there fantasy story line akin to a Miyazaki film and I love the options for winning (harvesting above, exploring below or a mix of the two). I kind of wish it allowed you to go play beyond the allotted rounds. Overall if you're looking for a great, beautiful fantasy game that is surprisingly non violent I would recommend this one.

Jim Butcher adds another series to his already excellent repertoire. (0 more)
If he's writing this, he's not writing Dresden :D (0 more)
Mixes high fantasy with steampunk overtures beautifully
I've read almost everything I can of Jim Butcher, so any new series he brings out will be worthy my attention.
In this new series he introduces some truly fantastical elements which blend themes of pirates, airships, high fantasy and steampunk technology to a breathtaking world.
Easy to get into and hard to put down, it's a novel you'll want to read again and again.

High quality thriller. Well worth investing time into
You can see the style of Brian fuller instantly in this high consept tv fantasy thriller from the creator of the excellent Hannibal tv series. If you enjoyed Hannibal for the richness of its style and hard imagery then this will be your bag.

This is pretty much what I would term your standard high-fantasy fiction: high fantasy as opposed to, say, urban fantasy, as it involves Dragons (albeit only at the very beginning, and then more-or-less forgotten about), Elves and Magic amongst other genre staples.

The Raven of the sub-title ('Chronicles of the Raven', remember!) are a group of mercenaries who, at the beginning of the novel, have lived and fought together for years. At the end of one contract, they are hired by a former enemy, before events start overtaking them and they find themselves as amongst the last hope for their land, which is descending into war ...

I found this to be an OK read: not the best of such-like books I've ever read; nor the worst.

Dollhouse - Season 2
2009 | Action
If you enjoy fantasy and sci-fi then this is one for you. Basically about where people can ask for people to carry out their own Fantasies. Finished on a high with rather a strange ending, but it was much better this way then to string it out like other TV series

First in "The Demon Cycle", this is very much what I would term a dark fantasy novel: not urban fantasy (like The Dresden Files), not heroic fantasy (David Gemmell) and not high fantasy (Lord of the Rings).

This is set in a world where Demons rise through the ground every night to terrorise/slowly cull the few remaining humans, the novel follows three seperate survivors of such attacks. It's pretty obvious that they are, eventually, going to meet up, which only happens in the latter porion of the book, by which stage one of the survivors has become The Painted Man (i.e. covered in magical wards, which the demons can't stand) of the title.

An enjoyable enough read, but I did find this to be occassionally hard going. I also picked it up when Waterstones had it on sale for about £3: for that price, I'm happy enough, but I also wouldn't be looking for the sequels at full price either.
