I think I would have enjoyed this book even more if it wasn't coming on the heels of me reading several other tragic YA books about teenagers dying (including The In Between and If I Stay). I sort of felt bludgeoned by the senseless tragedy of it all - perhaps I need to get out more?!

Anyway, the book follows the main character Sam, who dies in a car crash one night after a party. However, she finds herself reliving that day over and over (think Groundhog Day) for some reason and has to figure out how to make it stop. It's a rather weird premise and the way she finally breaks out sort of bothers me, so I felt a little deflated at the end.

That being said, I really liked Sam. She's a compelling character. Also refreshing is the fact that Sam and her gaggle of friends are the popular kids, on top of the pyramid at school. It's a change of pace from the usual romantics and geeks that show up in YA novels. (It does, however, make me 110% terrified for my children to reach high school.) As Sam starts to realize her own mean girl status-- and that of her friends--Oliver sets up a good message about high school and friendship. Not sure it would be readily apparently to every teen reading the novel, but I appreciate the effort.

A very different movie from the Marvel universe, Spiderman: Home coming, made perhaps the most overdone movie superhero fresh and exciting again. And how did they do that? Going back to the basics of who and what the character is: A high school kid, who looks like, acts like, and think like a high school kid.

Well acted on both sides of the good and evil, Tom Holland gives us an endearing Spiderman and follows up on his introduction in Captain America: Civil War. The Vulture, Spiderman's villain this go around, played by Micheal Keaton, has the one thing most superhero villains lack: a believable motive.


That's the one place where I think there was a little room to grow in this movie. There are hints of trying to make a social commentary on the military industrial complex and it's effect on the average citizen, but a lot of that gets lost in a visual action story. A small gripe, but, I think, a fair critique.


All in all, one of the stronger and more fun and enjoyable Marvel films to date.

Fifteen years after leaving the small town of Asheboro, Katherine “Kate” Hamilton is called home by her best friend Lisbeth. Asheboro is in financial despair after a huge storm damages all of the town shops. Insurance isn’t covering much and unfortunately, the town council had put all the town’s money into a historical Victoria mansion. What they need now is someone like Kate to help the town from going bankrupt.

No sooner does Kate arrive, but her nemesis and high school bully Cordelia is found dead. Her head bashed in on the steps of the Barton Mansion. There are a number of suspects including Cordelia’s ex-husband (and Kate’s old high school boyfriend).

The book had some good characters but they needed a bit more depth. The plot had some potential, but I wish that things were a bit more fleshed out. I felt the author repeated herself a number of times, just to fill the book with pages. I did like where the author was going with this new series and I plan on reading the next one to see what happens to the town and the character of Kate.
