Joni Thomas (33 KP) rated Titanic (1997) in Movies
Aug 24, 2018
I love all things Titanic related. This movie is what started the obsession so it will always have a special place in my heart.
I think the movie's casting was perfect. The drama was perfect, the storyline really draws you in and even though you know how the story ends you still find yourself wishing the ship would just miss the iceberg, just this once.
The special effects are quite good for the year the movie was made.
I love that although Jack and Rose are made up characters that there are some historical figures featured in the movie also. It really gives the movie a more authentic feel.

Erika (17789 KP) rated Outlaw King (2018) in Movies

There are two ways to do historical films; either show a lot about a little, or a little about a lot. This film opted for a little about a lot, glazing over some things, dwelling on others, then leaving the rest of the saga up to text at the end. I love history, but I was almost bored during it.
The accents were all over the place, which was slightly annoying. The acting was good, for the most part. Also, for all of the big hype over the full-frontal nudity... It was a weird thing to hype, and a weird time in the film to place it.

Sarah Betts (103 KP) rated Will the Real Carolyn Keene Please Stand Up in Books
Dec 31, 2019
I was given a copy of this book by NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
I have loved Nancy Drew Mysteries since I was 8. I've had to have read over 200 of the various series.
This book is a wonderful tribute to the character of Nancy and Carolyn, the pen name for the books.
The book spans almost a hundred years and goes into the life of Edward Stratemeyer and have s family and the ghostwriter Mildred.
I'm sure there will be some folks disappointed that this isn't Nancypalooza straight out the gate but it certainly is a cracking good piece of historical fiction.

MadyKate (400 KP) rated Stalking Jack the Ripper in Books
Dec 29, 2019
This was one of the few book series that I obsessively read and instantly loved. The romance isn't fast paced, there's historical facts that are interesting, and Maniscalco really knew how to captivate not just me, but other readers too (I got my friend obsessed with this series as well).
I will say, its not for those who don't like the extreme detail on violence and gore, but if you're a fan of crime novels and topics such as Jack the Ripper, then you ought to love this book!
I'm so glad I found this book and would happily recommend this to many people.

Lindsay (1760 KP) rated Anna's Crossing (Amish Beginnings #1) in Books
Jul 16, 2019
This is mostly about how it was dealing with how the Amish came to America. It really tells the story of what happens on a ocean crossing. To extent that it gives what it like when Amish and other were traveling to the New World for their freedom.
You do not go into it expecting what is to happen. It seem more historical then Amish. Though is mostly about Amish and how they come to America. Susanne tell a story about Anna and though she is with while crossing the ocean. She seem interested in the carpenter on the Charming Nancy? Who could that be?

Erika (17789 KP) rated The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness in Books
Jan 21, 2019 (Updated Jan 21, 2019)
Erik Larson is one of the popular historian writers that I really like. He builds a very big picture of the times, and what was going on in general, outside of H.H. Holmes' murder house. I enjoy knowing the whole picture to put everything into context. Holmes himself is terrifying, and creepily sophisticated for his time.
If you're expecting a book purely based upon Holmes murders, I would not suggest this. Larson builds a huge picture with rich historical detail, which isn't some people's jams. This book is more so about the Worlds' Fair, and how the murder house took advantage of the slight upheaval.
