Thanks to the publishers and NetGalley for the ARe-copy in exchange for this honest review. You can also read my review at my blog - roamingthroughbooks@wordpress.com" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://roamingthroughbooks@wordpress.com
I was keen to read this having enjoyed Macneal's first novel, The Doll Factory. However, I just did not connect with this storyline. I found the characters opaque and did not relate to their motives or actions. The relationships were shallow and left me unmoved. I found the secret contrived and lacking in any real revelation. Having said this I enjoyed the historical exploration of circuses and the trend of the Victorian fascination with "oddities". The themes surrounding identity and uniqueness were well delivered.

"A shocking parable for authoritarian populism. There’s nothing else like Canoa. Although Cazals and cinematographer Álex Phillips Jr. use only static shots, the movie is structurally fleet, shuffling chronology and cycling between faux-documentary, historical re-creation, and purely dramatic modes. I can’t think of anything else that so successfully fuses dyed-in-the-wool radical filmmaking and horror. There’s a wry on-screen narrator who creates this Brechtian distancing effect and manages to sound sinister while providing facts and statistics about life in rural communities, and by the end we’re in something like the Jonestown machete massacre. Ostensibly less outré yet harder to swallow than Salò, this is an unsettling, essential gem."

"In fact, the whole John Cassavetes: Five Films set. This is the starter kit for anyone who wonders about the roots of the American independent film movement. Seeing Cassavetes’s debut, the politically charged love story Shadows, is like watching the birth of a giant. Meanwhile, Faces and A Woman Under the Influence are searing portraits of the blinding pain true love can bring when a marriage ends up tearing a family apart. The Killing of a Chinese Bookie and Opening Night, on the other hand, are noirish sagas of death and business. Plus, Charles Kiselyak’s moving documentary A Constant Forge offers up the proper historical and cultural perspective on one of American cinema’s true visionaries."

With all due respect for Sharratt's really nicely written prose, I was unable to finish reading this book. I have a great love of historical fiction, and am willing to accept no small amounts of literary license when it comes to adjusting some facts to fit the story - for example, it is possible that William Shakespeare could have been bi-sexual. However, I was unable to overcome the blatant rewriting of history to suspend belief when, in this novel, William Shakespeare is still an impoverished poet AFTER the death of Christopher Marlowe. This is really too bad, because I had such high hopes for this book. My sincere apologies, and I'm sure other readers will be more forgiving.

The Man in the Iron Mask (1998)
The Man in the Iron Mask (1998)
1998 | Action, Drama
Late 90's drama, apparently based on the final of Alexandre Dumas's D'Artagnan Romances "Ten Years Later", and purporting to answer the mystery behind who was the real Man in the Iron Mask.

Yes, there was such a figure.

No, there's no historical evidence that he wore the mask 24/7, or that he was locked up in squalor.

This has an impressive cast list, including the likes of John Malkovich (Athos), Gérard Depardieu (Porthos), Jeremy Irons (Aramis), Gabriel Byrne (D'Artagnan) and a still-very-young Leonardo Di Caprio (Philippe/Louis) - who was then very much still in his 'pretty boy' phase - but the film just never really seems to 'take off' at all.

Told in a way that is interesting even for people not interested in historical shows.
Just as good, if not better than Game of Thrones
An absolutely incredibe binge-worthy show. There is not a boring moment in any episode and you will be wanting to start the next the second you finish an epsiode. It was told in a very captivating way that keeps you engaged and suprised, even if you already know the story of Chernobyl. Definitely worth the watch!
