Well written, realistic penny dreadful
The author has done quite a spectacular job of researching this piece of historical fiction, bringing to life a gruesome episode in 1800s Scotland. Expect to read a documentary type book and not a particularly suspenseful thriller. It took a long time to get into this book, mostly because the performance was quite dry and dull, hence I struggled to concentrate. During the crux of the story, in which Roddy is in court, the story picks up slightly, sounding more like a courtroom drama. He attempts to explore the idea of moral insanity, but falls short mostly because of the lack of understanding they would have at the time the book is set.
Well written and researched but a bit bland.

I have tried, over and over and over again, to get through this book. I just can't and I won't try anymore. There are far better books to read than to waste time on one that's not worth the expense it takes to get through it. Technically, the writing is good, but everything is just so boring and lifeless; I don't care about anyone or anything. Maybe if it didn't often read like a history lesson and had some movement, I would have liked this book better. Good historical fiction incorporates the history seamlessly into the narrative. This book didn't and the history actually came in chunks that disrupted the story. This is an author I'll be sure to steer clear of from now on.

I am still on the fence about this one. On one hand, I enjoy historical menage a trois much more than contemporary ones. That being said, this one did have itÂ’s faults. While I enjoyed the dynamic between the two male leads, I didnÂ’t feel much chemistry between them and the heroine. The mysticism aspect also came off as convenient writing. It could have really added to the story but instead it just seemed to excuse why things were the way were without much explanation.
Overall, I did enjoy this read. The storyline was interesting enough and most of the erotic scenes are well written. I wasnÂ’t wowed by it, but, knowing what I know now, I would have still read it.

Solid historical drama finds Steven Spielberg in serious, awards-trawling mode. Tale of noble, principled people working in the media who find themselves under scurrilous attack from hostile and mendacious president makes you glad you're not living in the 70s; good job this sort of thing couldn't happen nowadays.
Script does a good job of turning a potentially wordy story - various journalists, lawyers, and executives stand around discussing the ethics of publishing news - into a genuinely gripping drama, well performed by Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep. Perhaps just a bit simplistic in its presentation of politicians = bad, journalists = good, but that's essentially the message of the film (did I mention what good reviews it's had in all the papers?).

Hugh Jackman... duh
Good music and a good story though it is not really Barnum...
Really enjoyed The Greatest Showman. Hugh Jackman is always entertaining and throws himself fully into every role. He has a great voice and he and Zac Efron were terrific on the screen together.
While the music was very good, I don't know that it jumps to the tops of my Spotify playlist but I will be listening through it another few times and I will probably like it more.
It is not the historic Barnum. That is a good thing. He was a horrible individual. That would be a different musical.

Historical Drama done right
What's great about watching history play out is feeling like you understand it better thru people and how they see and deal with it. This series does it right. Even if you don't like "Spy" movies, this is about the people and what choices they make or don't make, the things they do to further the history or follow the tide that pulls them. I also feel like it doesn't just focus on the big names we know like Washington, this focuses on the locals in a small section, but influences the greater part. I really enjoyed the first three seasons and I'm now working on the 4th.

This is a story that will never get old
The first time I read this, I only gave it 3.5/ 5, and I really don't know why! I think that reading it in the serialised, Pigeonhole platform really helped, to be honest. It gave me time to think about what I'd read, and the comments from fellow readers really helped me to understand those parts (historical, mainly) that I'd previously struggled with. It's a great story of a mans transformation and his realisation that he really isn't a nice person. To live as he does, is to live a lonely, unfulfilling life. The ghosts show him his potential, both in the past and in the future, and hold his present up to him to confront.
