ClareR (6256 KP) rated Harlem After Midnight in Books

Harlem appears to be a much friendlier place to live in than London - at least Lena is able to be around more black people and doesn’t have to pretend to be (in her case) Italian. But there are also many differences. Lena learns that all is not well or ideal in Harlem.
Lena’s search for family related to her father is interesting. She’s desperate to find someone from her father’s side of the family after the disastrous journey to the US. She feels more alone and longs for her own family - and her mother’s side is out of the question.
I thoroughly enjoyed this: the lifestyle of black people in Harlem, their work ethic, their community and music is so well described (despite the murder!). Lena is an interesting character, and I do hope this isn’t it for her - I’d love to know what happens after her potential return to London.
