I really wanted to like this book. I wanted to ignore the (bad) hype and enjoy it, I really did. I really enjoyed "The Lovely Bones," and I'd like to think I went in to the story with an open mind, despite all the bad press. But I just couldn't do it... it wasn't even the subject matter, as much as the fact that I just didn't like it. I didn't like the story and I had no empathy for the main character. I know we were supposed to read about her childhood and feel sorry for her, but I didn't. I couldn't identify with her, I didn't like her, and I just couldn't get into the story she was telling. I only finished the book because it was like a train wreck... I just couldn't turn away.

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984)
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984)
1984 | Action, Adventure

"Number two would be The Temple of Doom, because when I was a kid I was obsessed with Raiders of the Lost Ark. It was, like, my favorite movie. As soon as I saw it I was like, “This movie is amazing.” I was so obsessed with it, and my parents… I don’t know if they knew there was Temple of Doom or if they just didn’t want me to see it because it was a little, like, edgier. Indiana Jones was my life. And then I remember at school one time someone said, “Oh, what about the other movie?” And the idea that there was another movie that I was unaware of was, like, nothing has been more of a shocking reveal since that day. And so I went and tracked down that movie, and what’s really amazing about that movie is it totally defies genre constraints. That movie is totally bonkers and totally sincere. It doesn’t really fit into any genre category. That’s what I always found so amazing and inspiring about that movie. It just seemed like this movie is so great, so any movie could be, like anything is possible. Because in this movie, people’s hearts are getting ripped out, and they’re closing up and then they’re still alive, and children are being enslaved by these sort of like ancient Indian mystical people, and they’re trying to find these stones that, put together, have powers, and there’s famine in the village, and they jump out of a plane on a raft, and everything is so turned up in that movie that it just — all the way down to the mine car race — it’s like one of the most awe-inspiring action or adventure movies I’ve ever seen. Yet it’s still totally grounded in the world of, like, this relatable character. I think that movie shows that a lot of other movies aren’t trying hard enough. Because, even the monkey brains part, it’s just such a memorable movie, it’s so bonkers, and yet it never feels like a joke, it always feels sincere. That to me was like, wow, you can do all these really fantastical elements in movies and you can still take them seriously and it works."

After reading the John Dies at the End trilogy I knew that I would read everything that this author wrote. Even though I wouldnt say that action is a genre I like very much I knew I had to read this book and I am so glad that I did!

David Wong always makes characters feel real to the reader, they are filled with flaws just like everyone else and they are not supermodel level hot like most books would make their characters seem. I also just love his sense of humor. I can be assured, whenever I read a David Wong book, that I have absolutely no idea what madness is going to happen next.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986)
Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986)

"That one’s awesome. I love that one, and I ditched school so many f—ing times, man. I can’t even count. There were times when I went to school so far from where my friends were, so I would leave. I’d catch a bus and a train and another bus just to go hang out with them. Just wanting to have a day away to escape and feel like the everyday, teenage superhero for just guilty pleasure desires rather than actually having superpowers. I just love that movie. It’s so good. I love when he does “Danke Schoen,” and when he does “Twist & Shout.” He does “Twist & Shout” in the parade. That’s super badass. I want to be Ferris in that. That’s the moment that makes me feel like, “All right, I want to be Ferris. I want to be Ferris Bueller.”"

I liked it way more than I expected. It seems marketed towards teenage goth girls but it's really just a crime solving show. The idea is pretty unique and well done. However, like most crime shows it's just a formulaic story that repeats every episode.

"I’m a total sci-fi freak, particularly when it comes to Arnie and machine guns. It’s just brilliant — genius. ‘Give those people air,’ and all that. I just love it. I love the mutants too. It’s like an old comic book that’s been turned into a film."

"I like Cool Hand Luke. To me, it’s an iconic [Paul] Newman performance. Everything from Newman to George Kennedy to just watching that spirit, and the sort of bitter triumph of that spirit even at the end. An amazing, unforgettable movie for me."

"I saw that film and I don’t like to cry in movies — I don’t think anybody does — just because it’s embarrassing, but I was sobbing in that film. It was such a beautiful story. It was this little film that spoke volumes and emotions were just so real and it just moved me. And honestly, I saw it at a time where I’d grown up loving movies and there was a period where suddenly it seemed like everything coming out was the same and I started getting annoyed and then I saw Central Station and Life is Beautiful within months (of each other) and it restored my faith in film-making."
