Erika (17788 KP) rated Captain Marvel, Vol. 1: Rise of Alpha Flight in Books

Ugh, I wanted to like the new Captain Marvel comics after Marvel did Warzones and basically blew everything into oblivion. But, Michele Fazekas is no Kelly Sue DeConnick. It also borrowed half of the story-line from one of the old Ms. Marvel stories. I'm not sure I'll want to continue reading on...

A BREATHTAKING CRIME THRILLER FULL OF SHOCKING TWISTS AND TURNS
He kills their wives. He destroys their families.
Then he comes after the husbands.
“Do you want to know who killed your wife?” he asks.
Kelly Roth, FBI profiler, returns home to Syracuse to stop a sadistic serial killer.
Three murders in three separate jurisdictions in central New York State have the same pattern: women killed by fatal head shots from a hunting rifle. Kelly Roth is sent from Virginia to help the local police.
Each victim was found murdered in a remote area or in a quiet park. The media call him “The Park Killer.” But Kelly doesn’t think the killer lurks in the bushes. She thinks he hunts his victims somewhere else.
Is he really contacting the bereaved husbands or is this just someone playing a sick game?
Kelly will risk her own life in a heart-stopping race against time to stop more murders and find out the truth.
HOW FAR WOULD YOU GO TO DISCOVER WHO KILLED YOUR WIFE?
Kelly is a terrific character and I enjoyed how the author weaved her backstory into today's killings. There are plenty of suspects with a story premise that keeps you guessing until the very end.
I love the fact that it is the males left trying to cope with being left behind instead of it being the females.
This is very well written; very atmospheric and chilling.
What I really liked about this novel was that there is no clue to what the outcome was going to be and no real idea where the investigation was leading, making this compulsive reading.
I could not put this book down. As for the ending; WOW; that just blew me away. Another explosive read from this author and so highly recommended.
Thank you to Joffe Books and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.

Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2072 KP) rated Murder at the Mushroom Festival in Books

Murder is Mushrooming
The community of Redwood Cove is getting ready for the annual mushroom festival. It includes a mushroom hunting contest that is bring out the worst in some of the residence. Kelly Jackson witnesses several fights, including between the people attending a mushroom class she is hosting at her bed and breakfast. However, she is still surprised when a dead body is found. As she and the Silver Sentinels, a group that works to solve problems in the community, start to investigate, they find motives beyond the mushroom festival. Can they figure out what is happening?
It was nice to get to reconnect with Kelly and her friends. They make a great group of characters, and I love seeing their relationships grow in this book. It was also interesting to watch the suspects evolve as the book progressed. The book managed to surprise me as to who the victim was going to be, something that doesn’t often happen. It kept me guessing on the killer until Kelly figured it out, too. If you are looking for a light cozy, this is the book for you.

It's not as good as the first. Not quite so many laughs, the storyline just wasn't as good. More of a gross out and slapstick comedy than the first. It's just silly a lot of the time, you'll like it depending on your sense of humour. Pity Kelly Brook wasn't in it a bit more!

Donald O'Connor's Make 'Em Laugh scene (1 more)
Debbie Reynolds
Donald O'Connor's Make 'Em Laugh scene is one of the best performances in all cinema. He was enormously talented and, arguably, even a better dancer than Gene Kelly. I love this classic movie. The storyline falls a bit flat with me but the singing and dancing can't be best.

I loved this book. Beautifully written story about a young girl who will soon learn unexpected truths about herself. I found myself emotionally caught up in the story and its strong characters. This is one of those books you simply cannot pass by. Kelly Risser is a very talented writer and I'm looking forward to reading more of her books.

Grace Kelly was a beautiful and talented actor who left a budding but already successful screen and stage career behind to marry a prince, literally. Author Kerri Maher's second novel is all about this special woman. See what I thought of it in my latest #bookreview on my blog here. https://tcl-bookreviews.com/2020/02/28/the-highest-of-serene-societies/

Seemed like a good idea...
Also known as Survival Island in America. Classed as an erotic thriller, unfortunately failing on both counts. Kelly Brook does get naked for about 2 mins of the film and that's it. There isn't much tension, or scares and it has a daft voodoo sub-plot. A similar and much better film, also starring Billy Zane, is Deep Calm.
