Dean (6925 KP) rated Harper's Island - Season 1 in TV
Aug 14, 2020 (Updated Aug 14, 2020)
It's a good horror/thriller series that mixes the kills of a slasher film with the mystery of a good whodunit? Quite similar to the Slasher series and other related items.
A wedding party retreat to a small island for a week of events leading up to the big day. The island was the location of a serial killer and some murders 7 years before. With some people returning to the island for the first time since it's not long before guests start to meet a grisly end.
It's good fun if you like slasher films or a murder mystery with a decent cast. The overall reason for the killings was a little weak at the end. However the location really adds to the feel of the series. Only 13 episodes around 38 minutes long, you'll whizz through it in no time.

Hole himself is your typical tortured detective who sits on the borderline of breaking the law but for his own moral reasons. He reminds me a lot of Luther in a way. The story in this is interesting and has a lot of twists and turns, although it does come across as slightly convoluted at times. I do like Nesbo's writing style and how despite featuring chapters from what you think are the killer or offender, he seems very adept at changing your perceptions completely. Whilst I enjoyed this book, there was something about it that dragged and felt a bit off, which is why it isnt as highly marked as it's predecessor.

The premise of the story is like nothing I have read before ... the killer lets the victim know they are going to die within the hour! What would you think? What would you do?
From the very beginning, the action starts and the pace doesn't let up throughout culminating in a heart-stopping, breath-holding finale.
There are twists, turns, trials and tribulations aplenty which made for an exciting read and I most definitely look forward to number 10.
Many thanks to Orion Publishing Group via NetGalley for my copy in return for an honest and unbiased review.

Maybe it's Harry Hole himself. A beyond flawed and almost irredeemable reckless and crazy character, yet one you really can't help but love. Or maybe it's because Nesbo really knows how to write a crime story. He keeps you guessing to the very end and the plot in this story is particularly interesting - an intriguing serial killer mixed in with Harry's vendetta to bring down a corrupt cop. The story in this is just right. The right amount of detail and twists to be thrilling and entertaining yet still plausible.
This isn't my favourite Harry Hole book, the accolade for that probably goes to The Snowman (how they turned such a good book into a terrible film I'll never understand). But this is definitely one of the better books in the Hole series and worth a read.
