Kristy H (1252 KP) rated Love the One You're With in Books
Feb 8, 2018
Story revolves around Ellen -- recently married, her life turns somewhat upside down when her old flame, Leo (he of an "intense" past love) returns to her life. Keeping Leo a secret from her husband Andy (he of a "pleasant, stable" love), Ellen finds herself torn between the two and questioning the state of her marriage. Adding to her troubles is the fact that Ellen's best friend, Margot, is Andy's sister (and was not one bit fond of Leo).
Many books have been written on the "old boyfriend returns" subject and while Giffin's is nothing outstanding, she handles the topic convincingly, giving Ellen surprising depth. A quick and rather enjoyable read.

An excellent, well-written portrayal of the complications of marriage and infidelity, with stand out characters. The fantastic 4 (& a half)

The incredibles follows a family of heroes, mr and mrs incredible and their 3 children.
Dash, violet & jack jack.
After bob (Mr I) breaks a marriage agreement of retirement, he is contacted by a mysterious client who seeks help after a rogue machine starts terrorizing his private island, which is a test to attempt to catch mr incredible and permanently eliminate him, concocted by syndrome, a former mr incredible fanboy. (Enter the angry wife & kids)
(So a family of four heroes, working for a secret evil genius, who they personally know? Are we sure this isn't a MARVEL movie?)

Charming performances by Piper Parabo (Coyote Ugly), Lena Heady, and Anthony Michael Head (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) (2 more)

A woman falls in love with another woman at her wedding reception. As they try their best to fight their love, it becomes so much clearer that despite her husband is a good man, he doesn't hold her whole heart, proving that love can be found in the most unexpected ways.

On a family holiday Jeremy takes his son out for the day. His marriage isn't doing too well and he's been having an affair, which triggers a sequence of events when his son finds something unexpected...
Rag Doll is a short story that plays with the reader as much as with the characters, in the same way a cat will play with an unfortunate mouse. This is a quick read but Scarberry uses the format well, in essence providing a sketch of the story and getting the reader to fill in the details.
Hard to say more without giving anything away. But definitely worth a read. Very thought provoking.

Ross (3284 KP) rated Captain Marvel, Volume 2: Stay Fly in Books
Jul 31, 2019
        Decent but not for me

I get that I am not the target market for this incarnation of Captain Marvel. This collection is split roughly in three. The story surrounding Chewie, with Rocket, was good, funny and well written. The second story, trying to save a rock star from an arranged marriage, was tedious drivel (similar to volume 1's Phantom Menace trade negotiations rubbish), and the third was slightly more what I would have expected from Marvel, a villain's attempt to take over New York.
A good collection for a character that some might really love, but definitely not my cup of tea.
