Famous box-office bomb is, as usual, not actually as bad as all that, just absurdly overblown for what should really have mid-budget genre movie written all over it. Origin story for the famous pulp western character; what makes the film curious (and quite interesting) is the way that it tries to combine different styles and tones - pulp and revisionist western elements rub up against the same kind of offbeat comic fantasy Verbinski and Depp had more success with elsewhere. This doesn't really work, but it's an undeniably curious mix.

Still, curious only takes you so far, and this is unlikely to be a film that lingers in most peoples' memory, despite a decent cast and good production values. Earns another point for the last twenty minutes, which are a genuinely impressive piece of Hollywood blockbuster bombast and spectacle. The rest could be worse, but could certainly be better, too.

"I hadn’t seen that movie when I made First Cow, but then I went to Cannes and was on the jury. I had just finished editing, and when I got back from Cannes, I was going to do my sound mix. I met Alice [Rohrwacher, director of Happy as Lazzaro] – she was on the jury with me – and so I watched her film before I went, and I love this film and I thought, “Oh my God, there are some similar things to First Cow as far as, like, Lazzaro wakes up in some other house and you don’t know how much time has passed…” I put that on my list because it was very important to me to let Alice know I found her so inspiring and great, and I felt a real simpatico with her filmmaking. It feels in the world of my memory of making First Cow."

Dark Thriller
An exhilarating thriller that switched from the perspective of News Correspondent Anna and her ex a DCI. They are both covering / investigating a death that strikes a little too close to their past.

The other voice of the murder is pretty disturbingly portrayed in the audiobook but once you get used to it its an exciting and twisty tale with a lot of disturbing moments. I lost my download of the audiobook somehow halfway through but luckily had an ebook copy I jumped straight int to finish and the memory of the creepy voice followed me.....

I kept thinking I knew what was going on but the strong and twisty writing of Alice Feeney kept me on my toes and left me satisfied all the way. This has everything I want from a dark thriller, disturbing but gripping.

Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for my copy.
