Andy K (10823 KP) rated Memento (2000) in Movies
May 26, 2018
Very unique storytelling
If you are a Christopher Nolan fan, or even a fan of movies that make you think, you should give Memento a try.
The story is pretty simple about a man (Guy Pearce) who is trying to remember details relating to the murder or death of his wife. The problem: the suffers from short term memory loss and wakes up every day having to start over.
Maybe like a serious version of Groundhog Day, Memento is such a fascinating slow burn, slow reveal of details. As the man encounters the creepy individuals who inhabit his life, he does not know who to trust or how the puzzle pieces will ultimately fit together.
If you watch the movie 10 times, you will find different layers in it each time.
A must watch!

Surprisingly sweet
I usually don't have much hope for original Netflix or Amazon Prime movies figuring if they were good a studio would have purchased them or they would have played in theatres; however, I thought this one was sweet. I do enjoy both Dakota Fanning and Elizabeth Olsen so I thought I would give it a try.
Two friends decide they want to have sex before going to college. Unfortunately, they decide on the same guy as their companion without telling the other. Relationships get complicated for sure.
Certainly not going to win any awards, but I thought the acting was solid all around including supporting performances by Ellen Barkin, Clark Gregg, Demi Moore and Richard Dreyfuss.
The dialogue was touching in spots and when things get complicated, you are really rooting for the friendship to ensure.

Ross (3284 KP) rated Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation (2018) in Movies
Jul 31, 2018
More of the same as the cast of the Hotel decide to go on vacation (the family decide to take all their friends obviously), on a cruise ship.
The overall plot was OK, but quote obvious, but the humour was definitely turned down compared to previous films in the series.
And what is with the obligatory DJ battle scenes?! Does Sandler have a load of low quality dance tracks he has to shoe-horn into movies as part of his contract now?! Just a total nonsense ending.
Having said that, my kids loved it.
I think I have unconsciously removed a couple of marks simply because my kids insisted on replicating the finale's dance moves for the next three hours (this makes me sound like a monster but once you know what that involves you'll understand!).

Fantastic!
I won this remote in a smashbomb giveaway and I could not be any more grateful!!! My parents already have one Roku Television & I gave this other remote to them for the second tv that they had in their home and now they can have a wide variety of shows, movies, etc. at their fingertips throughout their own little home! They live in an area where it is hard to get cable, and the installation is incredibly expensive so this works wonders for them! Especially since it can be linked to a Netflix! They are loving life! Sometimes it really is the little things! Thank you again so much! Hooking this up literally took 10-15 minutes! Easy breezy!

unique plot (2 more)
great acting
twists and turns
I went into this movie blind, having never seen the trailer or read the plot, and i thoroughly enjoyed it! Anna Kendrik and Blake Lively come together to make a great pairing, both being great actors and filling their characters with personality that grips the viewers attention from the beginning.
The movie contains many twists and turns, most of them surprising but some of them a little predictable (which is why i only gave it a rating of 9). Unlike some movies with a similar theme to this, such as Gone Girl, i found that the plot pulled you in from the beginning, rather than taking a while to get going.
Overall i thought this was a great movie with a unique plot line, deep and interesting characters, and great acting.

Do you dare to disagree?
This is one of those movies. You will cry everytime you watch it and yet feel so good afterwards. If you are about to watch this for the first time your in for a surprise. Our main characters are just us struggling in life Louisa to make a living and will to come to terms with his disability a. It is amazing to watch their main priority a in life become each other. It is lovely to see how life brings together a couple that would never have met and how much of an impact they have on eachothers lives.
Please go watch this movie it is honestly amazing and then leave your own review maybe we can have a debate about it ? although I've not yet met anyone who disagrees with me on this film yet.

David McK (3562 KP) rated The Courtship of Princess Leia (Star Wars) in Books
Jan 28, 2019
One of the earliest Star Wars EU books, this is also (IMO) one of the weakest of the early entries. I found neither Han nor Leia to be particularly like I remember them for the movies, and that's only the beginning of the problems wit the stories. For instance:
Han wins a planet (a freakin' planet!) I a card game??
The Hapes Consortium have a weapon called 'the gun of command' that robs someone of free will?
The Emperor - the man who oversaw the near-extinction of the Jedi - was afraid of a group of 'Force Witches' on a third-rate planet?
Rancors are (semi)intelligent?
If this had been the first Star Wars EU book instead of Zahn's Heir to the Empire series, I doubt the EU franchise as a whole would be as popular as it is.

Andy K (10823 KP) rated Black Hawk Down (2001) in Movies
Dec 31, 2018
One of the best war movies I have ever seen!
One of Ridley Scott's great films, Black Hawk Down tells the complicated story of American troops deployed in Somalia to take out a brutal warlord who has been committing genocide on his own people. When events do not go as planned, the troops are left in harm's way a lot longer than expected until reinforcements can be mobilized to assist them.
The intense combat footage, paralleled with the kinship the men gained by helpful one another through an almost no win situation is compelling, tragic and inspiring all at the same time.
The cinematography and realism in which the film was shot adds to the storytelling in a robust way and you really feel for the soldiers and their ordeal.
Fantastic film.

That one person everyone avoids
In This dark comedy about an unstable cable installer with a unhealthy addiction to stalking customers is one movie everyone can relate to wether it be a Fan, an Ex, jealous friend or secret admirer, this movie puts a great twist on a strangers friendship.
oddball cable installer Chip Douglas (Jim Carrey) decides to forcefully befriend new customer Steven Kovacs (Matthew Broderick) by offering him free premium cable. When Steven denies Chip his frequent need for companionship, Chip goes from oddball acquaintance to a obsessed psycho stalker. Though it's crystal clear to Steven, that cable guy chip is dangerous, it's convincing everyone close to him before its too late, that isn't going to be easy.
A perfectly dark tone quickly gets you glued in and works great for the movies characters and enhances the edginess for the plot.

Why did they have to use Singing in the Rain..... now it's never gonna be the same
Contains spoilers, click to show
So, I thought for this review i would make up some new words to expand your vocabulary.... but let's be serious, I'm a lazy reviewer. So, plot.... Alex and his friends get drunk on milk and go on an escapade. They befriend a homeless man and a couple. Alex gets chastised for being a bit naughty and has a eye widening television experience. He meets up with some old friends and...... oh wait, that was the end of the movie? Well.... ok then. Why does Stanley Kubrick just... I don't think he finishes movies. He just gets to a point and goes 'yeah, I'm done now'. Overall, interesting watch. One to show your friends.
