This is marvellous Victorian thriller set from the points of view of two flawed yet highly interesting characters. The central plot of murder, intrigue and abuse is written very well and is a brilliant page turner. I literally couldn't put this book down. It's not perfect and gets a tad rambly at times with some slightly old school language, but for the most part it's such an entertaining read. And the ending was completely unexpected and such a great twist, I really didnt see it coming.

This is not a tale for the weak-stomached with some truly gory and creepy imagery. It's both well written by Alex North and the audiobook was a great listen (narrated by Hannah Arterton and John Heffernan.)
I did find the ending slightly anti-climatic but I think part of it was the build-up was just so good.
Thanks to Macmillan Audio, the author, and NetGalley for the copy.
The ideas of the series - about free will, determinism, the nature of the universe and of destiny - are undeniably fascinating and well-presented, and the acting is generally very good too. The rather glacial pace and borderline pretentiousness of some of it are more of a problem, but they should come as no surprise to anyone who's seen Annihilation or Ex Machina. Starts slow, but it will get its hooks into you as it goes on.
