This does what it does fine enough but has been essentially rendered obsolete by even the weakest entry of the ๐˜•๐˜ข๐˜ฌ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฅ ๐˜Ž๐˜ถ๐˜ฏ trilogy (2 1/2, btw). Surprisingly I think this works better as a crime film than a full-on comedy; it's just so damn atmospheric what with the fun-as-hell (very) 80s synth soundtrack, intriguing mystery, kicky cinematography and all - qualities that all the best crime thrillers of the era have. But the comedy is shockingly inconsistent, you'd think having Chase as essentially a mile-a-minute quip machine for his signature dry smugness would be shoe-in but the jokes work at about a 40/60 hit-to-miss ratio. Maybe a generous 50/50? And there's a fine line between deadpan and downright dull - speaking as a usual Chase defender I find this performance leans to the latter a little too much, there's just not a lot to value in it over the countless other renditions of this character out there. Also it's an automatic crime that a movie in which Chevy Chase dons a metric ton of comical disguises and fake identities actively chooses not to lean into his legendary physical comedy. He only does like one funny dance and one paltry pratfall... what the fuck is up with that? Somehow still a blast in what should be its mediocrity. Utter fluff, but it'll do.

Amy-Faye is coordinating a celebration of Gothic novels for the local bookstore, culminating in a dance that night. The night ends in tragedy when a dead body is found โ€“ the body of a stranger. Amy-Faye had seen the victim during the events earlier in the day. Who was he? Why would someone kill him? And can the Readaholicsโ€™s latest read, Rebecca, offer some clues to the modern crime?

It is wonderful to be back in the presents of this group of mystery lovers. All five of the women are great and contribute in their own ways to the plot. The mystery is strong with some good twists and surprises before we reach the logical and satisfying ending. I hadnโ€™t read Rebecca before I picked up this book, but that didnโ€™t hamper my enjoyment at all.

NOTE: I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Was for a younger audience (0 more)
This book was enjoyable but definitely for a different audience. I felt like the way it was written, the actual story line and the main characters in the book it was probably aimed at teenagers.
When I read the blurb it seemed like a book I would normally read and it was a mystery but as I mentioned it was for a younger audience. So I would recommend the book to the audience it was aimed at. It was an easy reading book.
I still got into the book as I kept guessing who the perpetrator was and therefore it did turn into a page turner for me.
I learnt more about the characters as the book went on and my thoughts on them changed.
This book was part of a series and the only reason I didn't read the other books in the story was because it was bit too young for me.
I like more adult crime/mystery books.
I received a complimentary copy of the book from the author via Voracious Readers Only.
