April Rose Mossow (93 KP) rated Vampire Kisses (Vampire Kisses, #1) in Books
May 20, 2019
I enjoyed this book. I read it as a late teen and I liked the innocence. The storylines are not as complex or involved as other vamp books but I'd advise you, if you're looking for something more adult, you look at maybe the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris or Halfway to the Grave (also a series) by Jeaniene Frost. The characters were not overly mushy or sexual at all really. I think this book is more for the early teen years. I liked it because I could relate, I was a goth teen and that fashion still sticks with me. I also love vampires!
The rest of the series grows up with the characters and you see them become more complex and find out new things about them. It's kind of kiddish in its simplicity, but as the series has gone on I've enjoyed it more and more.

Not for everyone
I personally have always struggled this the series not just theone book from a young age. It may personally be because, as I grew up, I found I was more into true Horror/paranormal/distopian genres but I found this book very easy to put down and forget about and could never seem to get more than half way through the book and boredom caused me to put it down. I appreciate it's seen as literary genius but it is certainly not everyone's cup of tea.
Eleanor Luhar (47 KP) rated Tales From Earthsea (Earthsea Cycle, #5) in Books
Jun 24, 2019
This is the fifth installation of The Earthsea Cycle. In this book is a collection of short stories from different eras and locations within Earthsea. There are tons of links to other tales in this series throughout this book, including character crossovers. There's even a whole section on describing Earthsea at the end, giving a real in-depth history of the land and it's cultures.
I am getting a little bored with this series, but I think it's just because of how the writing has a rather archaic feel. This writing really does help create the universe, but it's just not my thing. I appreciate how effective it is in creating the world of Earthsea and immersing you in the book, though.
My favourite tale in this book is the final one, where a woman is allowed entrance into Roke School. I'm interested in seeing if equality returns to Earthsea - women with power are looked down upon, whereas sorcerers, wizards and especially mages are respected for their power.
I will stil finish reading this series, despite not loving it as much as I maybe should. 3 stars.

Suswatibasu (1703 KP) rated Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials (2015) in Movies

Grim, not for kids!
My first reaction was how can they call this a teen movie? It's so graphically brutal, from harvesting young people, to zombies, this should definitely not be geared towards a younger audience.
There are certain similarities with the Hunger Games series, with the younger generation in the future, seen as expendable. And unlike the first, where there was more action, this starts opening itself to a larger cast and more developed plot. As with any trilogy, the middle tends to be an explainer for the first and set up for the third film. Is it the best of movies? Probably not, given that HG was far better, but it's not bad.

Interesting, but nothing much happens
Don't expect this to be a true crime series. The blurb leads you to believe this may be a murder investigation. It is not.
What S-Town is, is an in-depth look at a troubled man in rural Alabama, who desperately wants some attention and for someone to care about the same things as him. He sees things happening locally that he is not happy with and is struggling to do anything about it.
The documentary series is a well structured analysis of a man with a head full of knowledge and a heart of gold, but with so many internal issues that hold him back.
Interesting, for sure, but not what you might be led to expect.

David McK (3692 KP) rated Solo Command (Star Wars: X-Wing, #7) in Books
Jan 30, 2019
Released pre Episode I, the Star Wars: X-Wing books are, I believe, amongst the first EU ('Extended Universe') novels that do not focus on the main protaganists of the films as their central characters, taking instead LucasArts X-Wing/TIE fighter games of the 90s (as an aside - somebody really REALLY needs to re-make those for modern machines) as their inspiration.
This is the 7th book in the X-Wing series, and the 3rd to focus primarily on the activities of Wraith squadron, after both Wraith Squadron and Iron Fist. Unlike the previous novels in the series, this also includes a larger role for some of the characters from the original film series - the 'Solo' of the title actually refers to Han Solo, and not to Solo as in 'single'. As well, this also includes members of the first 4 X-Wings books (i.e. Rogue Squadron) in the story.
Blasted through this one in about 2 days flat.

ok... due to not knowing this was the 3rd in the series I was honestly confused on the characters most the time. The plot was good.. The characters were interesting, but coming into it late just confusing also. I do want to read the others though
Chris Hooker (419 KP) rated Renovations (By Design #6) in Books
Mar 29, 2018
Moving on to bigger things. Candace is now the govenor of New York. New crisis arise both in family and out. I absolutely love how Armstong weaves the relationships throughout this series. She shows life is not perfect but with love and compromise anything is possible.
Chris Hooker (419 KP) rated Death In Time (The Extractor Trilogy #3) in Books

First off I did not know this was a series. Second it stood fine alone but makes me need to read the first two since the characters were amazing! The action and tone of the story kept me up all night reading. More books to the pile.
