"Like the Roth novel, this short story contains some of the most exquisite dialogue I've ever read. It's only four pages, covering about 45 minutes, as a couple waits for a train in Spain. You come to realize that they're talking about her having an abortion. Actually, they never speak about it overtly, but their story is just heartbreaking. Again, it's about people who are recognizing the distance between them. It's a very appealing story for an actor because drama exists in what's not spoken."

"A classic ghost story, from a novel by Dorothy Macardle, directed by Lewis Allen. Brother and sister Ray Milland and Ruth Hussey buy a cliff-top home in Cornwall that turns out to be haunted by at least two spirits and one still-living person . . . the waif Gail Russell, who is drawn to the room where her mother supposedly died. It’s one of those Hollywood films that was too sophisticated for the censors, with several transgressive elements (lesbianism, illegitimacy) couched tactfully and woven deeply into the mystery."

The protagonist of this novel is Verity, and the book is told from her perspective. Verity is a very strange woman, and she does realise that. She tries her best to fit in this world, but she has a ton of difficulties because of her behaviour. Verity has a lot of mental illnesses, but she hides them quite well. I liked how the characters unravelled throughout the pages, showing their true personalities. I really liked Verity’s strangeness, it was very interesting to see how her mind worked.

The women who went to Europe in 1917 as signal corps officers with the US Army, played an enormous part in helping bring the “Great War” to its conclusion. However, until 1979, they were literally the unsung heroes of WWI, because the army refused to recognize them as proper soldiers. This injustice brought author Aimie K. Runyan to write this gripping historical fiction novel, that highlights these women and their contributions. You can read my #bookreview of “Girls on the Line” on my blog now.

France and fine wine are practically synonymous, so when Kate needs to study for her Masters of Wine test, where else would she go but to her own family’s vineyards in Burgundy? There she finds there’s much more that’s been corked up than just some delicious drinks. This is the basis of Ann Mah’s newest novel “The Lost Vintage” and you can read my review of this contemporary and historical fiction book on my blog here. https://tcl-bookreviews.com/2018/07/27/bottling-their-history/

Fredrik Backman's latest novel takes place in the small Swedish town of Beartown, which is slowly dying, practically having nothing left but their love of hockey. Their only hope is with their junior hockey team; if they win the finals this year, they're sure things will change for them. However, sometimes change comes in unexpected ways, and Beartown is about to experience that first hand. Find out what I thought of Backman's latest work in my review here.

Even though the initial (UK) publication date of this book was pushed off to July, I couldn't wait to post my #bookreview of this lovely novel by one of my favorite authors. Once again, Joyce has given us characters who would not want you to love them, but you surely will despite them! Combine that with an adventure of discovery in New Caledonia and you've got a roller-coaster of a ride of emotions in store for you!

*sigh* Owen...

I don't know what to say other than I'm glad you've realised that you can get over your guilt, that you do deserve to be with Gin, that you won't let Salina come between you for much longer.

I loved how you beat the crap out of those two, with a little help from Phillip of course, just so Gin wouldn't have another enemy to beat when she got back to her car.

You better win her back properly in the next full length novel!
