Dracula Untold came out around the same time that Game of Thrones was beginning to take off, which would explain why the whole film feels like a poor man's GoT and why it has half of it's cast involved. It only held my interest due to the subject matter of Dracula himself. Luke Evans is a decent enough lead, and this take on Dracula's origin story is engaging to a degree, but underneath the stylish vampire visuals, it's just another sword wielding war film.

Fun Middle School Origin Story
Bruce Wayne stands out at his middle school, Gotham Preparatory School for the Really, Really Gifted. No, not because of the wealth he’s inherited from him parents but because he’s the only one without any powers. But when he sees a student bullying another kid, he decides he has to do something. Will he come up with a plan?

This is a fun alternative take on Batman’s origins including cameos from other DC super heroes. The story was entertaining, and I laughed multiple times as I was reading. Be sure to look at the illustrations since some of the jokes are in there. This graphic novel is a very fun read.

Better than The Last Jedi
Did we really need a Han Solo origin story? Even after watching this I'm not entirely sure.

The cast are fantastic, there are some great performances here and you can't really go wrong when you throw Woody Harrelson into the mix. The film plods along at a fairly decent pace and the plot is engaging, albeit fairly predictable. Some of the dialogue is a bit stilted and the humour seems very misplaced. With l3 it seems like they've tried to add a new version of K2S0 from Rogue One to generate some laughs, but sadly unlike K2S0, L3 just doesn't really work.

I feel like this film is just trying to tick some boxes and cover the Solo basics (how he meets Chewie, Lando, and wins the Falcon), and it seems to gloss over all of these in a few minutes. Far too quickly. As an origin story it should almost show us how Han changes into the person he is in the later films, but it doesn't. You don't see the jaded untrusting cynic he becomes.

Don't get me wrong this film is fairly fun and enjoyable, it's just a little forgettable.

A shy teenager falls for someone who transforms into another person every day.

David Levithan knows how to write around good subject matter. Consistently pleasing novels that make excellent movies. And this one was no exception to that.

The feel good factor about this one is high. And while I love a good romance I find it difficult to believe that even a hormonal teenager would choose to believe such a wild story.

"I wake up every morning in someone else's body." A plot point with lots of potential story lines. But lots that I think I would have enjoyed more than this. That fact doesn't take away that I enjoyed this a lot.

A film with no end and no beginning though... why are you guys doing this to me? Where was the origin story? Where was some resolution?

Good but not quite Marvellous
I was looking forward to this film to find out about Captain Marvel before Avengers Endgame arrives. I don't know much about the comics so from that point of view it's all new to me. The film is good and runs at a good pace with plenty of action. It follows a tried and tested Marvel formula the latest films have used. It's enjoyable but I don't think it's quite up there with the best origin story films or the Avengers series. Roll on to endgame!

Another movie that I feel gets quite a bit of undeserved negative attention.

An origin story of how Han Solo became the Han that we have come and known to love in the Star Wars universe. Some underdeveloped characters, as I think the makers literally just ran out of time and energy. Overall a fun movie with significant tie ins to the SW universe as a whole. Seeing the introduction of Chewy to Han was a personal highlight, as well was the performance of the great Woody Harrelson.

I enjoyed reading a superhero story rather than the traditional graphic novel format, and feel it was quite well delivered.
The narration is a little too fan-boy for my liking and at times is quite irritating.
The plot is great and action rolls along at a good pace, with mostly good characters introduced, though they all feel a little clichéd.
I did like the premise where those with superpowers are in charge and the world does their bidding. I would love to read a prequel book where the superheroes fought and divided the world up into fiefdoms for all the most powerful, though at the same time having little on the "origin story" works out quite well in this case.

I went to London Super Comic Con on Friday and bought a few image books/graphic novels (I can't wait to read them!) and decided to start taking advantage of my boyfriend's extensive comic/graphic novel collection. As I've been intending to read The Killing Joke for ages now, I decided to start with that.

The edition I read included an introduction by Tim Sales, an afterword by Brian Bolland, and a final scene written and illustrated by Bolland.

This is one of the most famous and successful novels - and I can see why. The story is just fantastic - the Joker tries to prove that anyone can go insane after just one bad day, using Jim Gordon as his example. The colour palettes are so cleverly thought out, giving an eerie, creepy tone to most scenes, while the Joker's (possible) origin story is mostly black and white with just small details in red.

Batman is obviously included, but is not a massive character in this story. The focus is on the Gordons and the Joker.

I really loved this. The origin story for the Joker that's included can be taken as true or false - the Joker makes a comment about not actually remembering his past, and liking it to be "multiple choice". This gives the reader the choice of believing it or not. And the Joker's ways of putting Jim Gordon through hell are definitely in line with his character.

The Joker always fascinates me, and I would love to read all his stories. But whether you're a "fan" of his or not, this book is definitely worth the read. 5 stars; an fantastic novel.

Gotham - Season 3
Gotham - Season 3
2016 | Drama
The third series of this "making of Batman" show takes something of a step away from the young emo Wayne, and allows more of the villains to start to develop. There is something that really appeals to me about seeing a possible origin story of each of these characters all intertwined, with that same "who is the joker" question at the back of your mind. While I feel the number of episodes is too high for the overall plot, giving the pacing an issue or two, I still really enjoyed this series, with some epic ham acting injected throughout.
