Gisell Middleton (189 KP) rated A Map of the Dark in Books

This novel had many layers which is often the case with stories featuring “damaged” investigators wanting to “make a difference”. It is not an original concept as it is seen more often than not; however, this book introduced us to an array of characters whose lives and backgrounds make the reader want to know more. To say that the lead investigator’s backstory was more distressing and disturbing than the crimes she is investigating would be an understatement. The detective work feels solid and the characters are believable. This was certainly a page turner with a surprise at the end which brings some satisfaction.
A piece of literary beauty.
What can I say to describe a book that had me entranced from the first to the last page? It made me laugh, it had my holding my breath with anticipation, and it made me shove the book under my husbands and children’s noses to show them the meandering words of Dead Papa Toothwort as they crawled across the page. It’s just a glorious book!
I marvel at the mind of someone who can write something as original and beautiful as this - it’s poetry in prose form, and I loved reading every word.

Having waited 30+ years for this film I fell asleep upon first viewing as I was bored rigid.
I am a huge fan of the original, however this was a gigantic disappointment, Gosling is as charismatic as a broken rubiks cube and Jared Leto was useless as a Tyrell wannabe who dials in a William Shatner style performance as he attempts to steal every scene he is in.
The cinematography and sound design are outstanding and that's where the good stuff ends.
Let me make this quite clear, I do not like this overly long moving picture!

This was a series that was a spin off of vampire diaries but I feel was so much better. I love the way it ended but not that it ended. This follows the story of the original vampire family and how they became so cruel, also how in a way how they became good again. Thought a little mirical baby names hope, and how in the end why she became an orphan. If you love a good witch, vampire, werewolf fued this is just a must see.

A grim, captivating portrayal of mental decay (4 more)
Bone-chilling soundscape creates an oppressive sense of dread
Expert storytelling leaves its mysteries for you to solve on your own
Voice recognition option adds to the game's immersive qualities
Scares are subtle and don't rely on overused jumpscare tropes
Prequels run the risk of diminishing the magic of the stories they lead into, but The Inpatient is a rare exception that entirely manages to avoid that.

Buy the soundtrack, don't watch the film
As per usual, another overhyped Hollywood film that claims to be innovative with its music numbers. No doubt, the soundtrack is fantastic, to the point I went and bought the vinyl immediately. But all the malarkey surrounding "timed music sequences" was nothing original, and I used the entire film as a background film to wash the dishes and do chores.
There is no real plot. It's like Fast and Furious with good music (I am not a fan of the former). So if action isn't your cup of tea, just listen to the soundtrack.

Awesome remake of a horror classic
There isn't really anything bad to say about this film despite a lot of critisism of the CGI effects of Pennywise the dancing clown. I, however disagree and believe that this version was far more chilling than the first version. Pennywise was back on form with his creepy and outright terrifying behaviour. The plotline rarely strayed from the original script and the cast did well to keep you engrossed in the movie. I thoroughly enjoyed this film and was quite excited when I picked up the dvd yesterday.

I was on a Jane Austen kick when this popped up on Net Galley. I was delightfully surprised that this novel wasnt horrible. Jane Austen retellings/rip offs are a dime a dozen, especially modern versions. However, I felt that this was a lovely retelling. I felt is held true to its inspirations and I likes Evan and Darcy almost as much as Elizabeth and Darcy. The side characters were just as meddling and frustrating too!
Bottom line, if you want a cute modern retelling that doesnt butcher the feel of the original, I highly recommend this novel.

Orleans is a bag-building and worker placement board game. You must increase your followers to take more actions, get board position and gain more VPs.
Orleans is a mid-weight board game with worker placement and area control mechanics. You must thoughtfully build your crew of followers in order to win.
The components for this game are very nice the art looks medieval and the tiles and chits are all durable. The rules are well written and easy to follow too.

A slight improvement over the 2nd film, but that doesn't say much. It's good Feldman links the 3 films, but I have to say his acting is pretty poor. Nice the story is centered around him more in this one. The plot is a bit silly but the effects of the Vampire kills are ok and very Blade like, along with the Vampire club idea. There are a few flash backs to the original and a nice tribute scene to Corey Haim. A better sequel for the fans than the 2nd film, but still quite average overall.
