Liberty Boston (93 KP) rated The Legend of the Fire Princess (She-Ra Graphic Novel #1) in Books

(Forgive typos I'm reviewing on my tablet)
I was ecstatic when this was first announced. Honestly it's been on my to buy list for months. Thanks to the pandemic, however, I never got the chance.
So when I found this while browsing Libby for a quick read I grinned like the Cheshire cat and checked it out pronto.
I wasn't disappointed. The art makes it seem like the characters jumped out of an episode.
The story is solid it just...
Ended too quickly I guess?
I mean the ending was good but too fast for me.

I had intended to read this book on a Florida beach vacation, which was canceled due to the pandemic. It made me miss the beach, with its lush descriptions of the South Carolina Low Country. Harper finds solace in the beach and a dolphin friend (yes, you read that right). The book is silly and cheesy, and exactly what I would have wanted to read while on my trip. I especially liked Carson and will eventually pick up the next in the series (each book is told from the perspective of a different sister). 3+ stars.

I have read one of Mr Mayo's previous outings, Knife Edge, before and although I thought the middle was a bit of a miss for me, the start and end were great so it didn't put me off reading more of his work and I'm pleased it didn't, as I enjoyed this one.
Having survived the Covid pandemic and things are returning to 'normal', another illness strikes that could prove just as deadly. Kit, his daughter Rose and partner Lilly find themselves right in the centre as the new pandemic emerges and starts to spread.
There is a very strong sense of tension from the start which grows as Kit and Rose try to evade what you feel is inevitable infection whilst Lilly uncovers a possible family connection and secret Government research and dubious testing practices.
The characters are strong and are believable, the plot is current (maybe a little too current!) and the pacing is good. There is quite a bit of scientific speak which I felt was a bit too much and, I think, wasn't particularly necessary or added to the story that much.
Overall, a decent thriller which kept me engaged and my thanks to Random House UK, Transworld Publishers and NetGalley for enabling me to read Tick Tock and share my views.

Veronica Pena (690 KP) rated Contagion (2011) in Movies
Jun 17, 2020
I had such high hopes for this film and it just let me down. I watched 'Outbreak' not too long ago and that was such a great film that in comparison to it, 'Contagion' just fell short. I think of the pandemic films I've watched recently, this film is definitely the most accurate to what the world is experiencing currently, but the level of urgency just wasn't felt in this film in comparison to 'Outbreak.'
I think this film was fine, it wasn't jaw-dropping and it didn't keep you on the edge of your seat, but it wasn't the worst thing ever so I guess that counts for something.

Charlotte (184 KP) rated A Plague Among Us (Mimi Goldman Chautauqua Mysteries #8) in Books
Oct 17, 2021
A fun and interesting read that hits close to home.
A Plague Amongst Us is the eighth in the series and it doesn't disappoint. Not only is it fresh and current - using the Covid-19 pandemic as a theme - but it also reminds us about human nature.
Full of twists and surprises you'll be kept guessing all the way through. Strong female main characters are always a plus and this definitely has those.
It would be great to see this turned into a TV series. I can easily see myself sat with my tea and biscuits just like I did when I read it.
