A strange sort of erotic/period drama rather than a comedy I felt. A young conservative couple go on a trip to Austrailia. Where the people around them and enviroment lead them to be less sexually repressed. Most well known for Elle Macpherson's role.

1977 | Comedy, Romance

"I find a lot of comedy from this period to be dated, but I never feel that way about Annie Hall. Somehow even references to psychoanalysis and Marshall McLuhan feel vital. And you’ve got to love Paul Simon as the most unlikely lothario in film history."

What a rollercoaster! For any Jane Austen fan out there, this is one that you need to go watch. The filmmakers do a fantastic job of creating a lovely period comedy that is rarely seen nowadays. Beautifully crafted, well shot, Production Design was absolutely perfect. I have very high praise for this film! Probably my favorite of 2020 so far!

New Years Eve
A perfect Romantic Comedy for those who like dialog... Really nails the time period.... and a diner scene.
Way beyond quirky, but still interesting and relatable. This is one of those films that when it comes on TV I don't change the channel until the next commercial breaks the spell. It's great. For Meg Ryan, her best films are this one and Sleepless in Seattle.

"Say Anything is just such a sweet coming-of-age movie. I just love everything about it: the romance, the comedy, the time period, the music, and the chemistry between the two lead characters. This movie was the beginning of a lot of great careers. The image of John Cusack and the Peter Gabriel song “In Your Eyes” is just so iconic. And Cameron Crowe is my favorite director of all time. If there were a sixth favorite film, it would have been Almost Famous."

This was a pretty humorous play. Being a Wit Comedy, from the Restoration period, I would expect no less. If you though Shakespeare had lewd and sexual comedy that was noticeable, this was over the top. Almost any line was able to be read like it was a sexual comment. I loved it. This play is about how women want to be with what they can't have. Even though the main character Horner enjoys the attention, he has an out. At the beginning of the play, he starts a rumor that he is a eunuch, thus making the husbands believe their wives are safe from his "treacherous loins" when he is actually, quite literally, screwing them over.

Overall, I actually enjoyed reading this play more than I thought I would. Though it got a bit convoluted at certain points, it was still very enjoyable.

Little bit Slithy, little bit Frabjous
Oddball comedy-drama that sets the tone for much of Terry Gilliam's career by being visually ravishing but a bit all-over-the-place story-wise. Gilliam's background at the time was in TV comedy, which may explain why so many well-known TV comics turn up in the film - apart from Michael Palin, there's Warren Clarke, Harry H Corbett, John le Mesurier, and so on.

The thing is that this isn't actually very funny - there are the seeds of some good jokes here, but the fact the movie has been filmed and edited in the style of an art-house historical drama kills most of them dead. Still, the medieval period has seldom been brought to the screen with such an authentic sense of filth, squalour, and misery, and the monster suit is pretty good. That said, if you're not into absurd comedy, Dragonslayer (1981) tells a very similar story in a more accessible style.

(And I have to say I'm astounded a film so focused on gore and bodily functions has only got a PG certificate. Caveat emptor.)

A British film that actually got recognition (0 more)
Poor Milky (0 more)
British classic
Unless it's a comedy, British films often don't get the recognition they deserve. This did. Friends in the State's were messeging me saying they have seen it.

The unscripted acting was warm when it needed to be and tense when it needed to be. It shine a light on Thatcher's Britain, divided and angry, a but like today. It's not always easy to watch but at the same time there is recognition of anyone who lived through this period.

So good it spawned a TV series, This Is England is one of Britain's best.
